Govt misses World Anti Corruption Day yet again | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 11: At a time when Government claims to be on the forefront of curbing the menace of corruption, this year again there was no official function by any Government agency to commemorate the World Anti Corruption Day. Details available with Early Times reveal that not a single function was organized to commemorate the International Anti Corruption day which was observed globally on Saturday Dec 9. The Anti Corruption agencies in J&K like State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) and State Accountability Commission (SAC) also failed to observe this day. The theme of this year's World Anti Corruption days was "United against corruption for development, peace and security". Corruption which is a major problem across the world has become an issue of serious concern for people belonging to all walks of the society. The media has been highlighting the issue every now and then and no day passes when the newspapers or news channels do not carry issues related to graft and corruption. Jammu & Kashmir state has been ranked one of the most corrupt states in India by Transparency International India. In-spite of the fact that J&K state has several organisations which are working for eradication, exposing and prevention of corruption but none of these organisations commemorated the International Anti- Corruption day which was celebrated world -wide on December 9th. Early Times had carried a detailed report on this issue last year and on Dec 10th 2014 ,as no official function was organized by Government, District administrations, Vigilance Organisation or Vigilance Commission consecutively from last 2 years. It was presumed that authorities will wake up , but unfortunately they again committed same blunder this year by not giving any respect to this day. "Pertinent to mention that State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) observed World Human Rights Day of Dec 10th and similarly Tourism Department commemorated World Mountain Day on Sunday(Dec 11th) , but it was so sad that World Anti Corruption day was not at observed in our state" said Dr Mushtaq Khan an RTI campaigner associated with J&K RTI Movement. "The non serious attitude of Government particularly the bureaucrats clearly shows how much serious authorities and our anti corruption agencies like State Vigilance Commission (SCV) or Vigilance Organisation (VO) are towards eradication of corruption from the state. Why to blame only political leadership , these ideas are to be given to Ministers and Chief Minister by IAS officers and Government officials, but they hardly would discuss the significance of these days with Chief Minister " Dr Mushtaq added. Pertinent to mention that United Nations' (UN) International Anti-Corruption Day aims to raise public awareness of corruption and what people can do to fight it. It is observed on December 9 each year. International Anti-Corruption Day is a time for political leaders, governments, legal bodies ,NGO's and lobby groups to work together against corruption work by promoting the day and the issues that surround this event. On this day anti-corruption advocates organize events to engage the general public to effectively fight against corruption and fraud in communities. |
