Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 21: The rule of the Congress in Jammu & Kashmir was hardly positive and since 1947 itself, when Maharaja of the state using his constitutional powers linked the fate of his state with India. It always hobnobbed with undesirable forces in the Valley and left no stone unturned to displease Ladakh and Jammu to keep Kashmir in good humour. It would get mandate from Jammu and Ladakh but would work for Kashmir and a particular section of Kashmiri society that has been at the helm ever since the state's accession.
The only period when the Congress played a positive role in the state was between 1965 and 1975. The Congress was at the helm and this period was called the age of the state's political and constitutional integration into India. Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi contributed a great deal to the process of the integration. Hundreds of central laws were introduced, nomenclatures of Wazir-e-Azam and Sadar-e-Riyasat changed and the state was brought under the ambit of several central schedules and Entries. It then appeared that the state would be brought at par with all other states of the Union.
However, in February 1975, Indira bungled and the state was handed over to Sheikh Abdullah. Ever since then, the state has been in turmoil. In was in Nov 2005 that state again came under the Congress rule and GN Azad became the Chief Minister. The hope that he would start from where it had left in 1975 but it didn't happen. Azad government did which Sheikh Abdullah couldn't dare to do, In 2007, his government and all the Kashmiri parties joined hands and introduced Sharia in the state.
However, it was on December 19 that the Congress crossed all the lines and came in support of the Hurriyat in a most brazen manner. Former JKPCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz and present JKPCC chief GA Mir by their utterances established that the Congress was no different from the National Conference and their attitude towards the Hurriyat was also no different from that of the NC.
Saif-ud-Din Soz said that "he is with the Hurriyat Conference as they represent anger of people of Kashmir," and asked New Delhi to "understand the pain of Kashmiris". He also urged the civil society groups outside Kashmir to communicate the opinion of Kashmiri people to the Government of India, saying "Kashmir issue is dependent on the people of Kashmir".
GA Mir also said almost the same thing. In fact, he suggested a 2 to 3-day closed door discussion on the Kashmir issue and solution to the so-called Kashmir problem.
What the Congress leaders said was precisely what NC president Farooq Abdullah had said about its stand on the Hurriyat and its azadi demand on December 8 at Srinagar. He had offered unstinted support to the Hurriyat and assured it that he would ask his cadres to join the Hurriyat movement and not stay away from it.
Farooq Abdullah's statement that he supported the Hurriyat and the statement of Soz that "he was with the Hurriyat" should clear the air and only suggest that the Congress has completely deviated from the path and it is now no more than an extension of the Hurriyat.
It was expected that the congress leaders from Jammu and Ladakh would speak and denounce Soz and Mir but it has not happened even after 48 hours. There is no doubt that the Congress is digging its political grave both in Jammu and Ladakh.
