Vertical split in NC over domicile certificates to WP refugees | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 21: The National Conference is vertically split along regional lines over the issue of state government's decision to issue domicile status certificate to the West Pakistan refugees settled in the Jammu. The Kashmir based leadership, which forms the bedrock of the party, has asked the party's central leadership to oppose it, while the Jammu leadership is asking to keep silent on it. "How can we oppose this process. It addresses the genuine problem of the refugees and more importantly they are not being given state subject. It will be politically suicidal for the party especially in the Jammu region if opposes it in any form. We have won two seats from the heartland of the Jammu and opposing it would tantamount to insulting the verdict of the people, who share concerns of the refugees," said a senior NC leader from the Jammu. The National Conference has got itself in the trap as it has been consistently raising the pitch on issues which are closely bordering 'soft-separatism' after being out of power. The party which has even said that Hurriyat should not see it as his adversary is finding it difficult to support this process when the Hurriyat has decided to oppose it. "How can we support this process. It's more of an emotional issue in the Kashmir with huge political overtones. This set of leadership of has decided to be seen as a comrades of the separatists and if they support it they will be undoing what they have been saying all these months, especially after the death of the Burhan Wani. We have to oppose it and the top leadership of the party has to take a call. And, we should not forget that it's in Kashmir where we have vote bank not in the Jammu," said a NC leader from the Kashmir. The NC has all these years not taken a single step for addressing this problem. Even its tallest leader late CM Sheikh Abdullah didn't address it and the genuine humanitarian problem was seen from the prism of 'religious' lines. "We are demanding roll back to 53 status, which gives a status of quasi soverign state. So in this scheme of thing the 'outsiders'- refugees of W Pak- don't stand chance. So we can't bee seen as even supporting any act which establishes the fact that they are residing in J&K in any form," said the NC's Kashmir based leader. |
