Srinagar, Dec 24: Even though there was some improvement in the night temperature, people continued to shiver as mercury remained below freezing point in Kashmir Valley, where light rain and snow is predicted at higher reaches during the next 48 hours. Meanwhile, there was a drastic improvement in night temperature in Leh in Ladakh region due to cloudy skies. Against minus 8.2 degrees recorded yesterday, the night temperature in Leh was minus 1.5 degrees. The coldest night temperature recorded in Leh was on December 15, when mercury dipped and settled at minus 14 degrees.
A Met department spokesperson here today said light rain and snow would occur at higher reaches in the state during the next 48 hours.
Sun was playing hide and seek with icy cold winds also continued in the Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, where life remained affected due to separatist sponsored strike for the second day today.
Meanwhile, people woke up to yet another chilly morning due to cloudy skies, coupled with ice cold winds in the summer capital, Srinagar, which witnessed improvement in the night temperature. Against minus 5.5 degrees recorded yesterday, the night temperature was minus 4.4 degrees, which is 3.6 notches below normal. The day temperature recorded was one degree below normal.
The coldest night temperature recorded in the summer capital was on December 20, when mercury was minus 6.5 degrees.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, also witnessed improvement in the night temperature though it was still 2 degree below normal. Against minus 2.2 degrees recorded yesterday, the temperature was minus 2 degrees there, where famed ski slopes are yet to receive major snowfall.
There was some improvement in the night temperature in world famous health resort of Pahalgam, where mercury surged at settled at minus 4.6 degrees, against 4.8 degrees recorded yesterday. The night temperature was about 1 degree below normal.
The night temperature in Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir valley, also witnessed some improvement due to cloudy skies. Against 4.8 degrees recorded yesterday, the night temperature was minus 4 degrees, which is around 3 notches below normal.
Kupwara in north Kashmir and another health resort of Kokernag were coldest places in the region. Against minus 5.4 degrees recorded yesterday, the night temperature was minus 4.8 degrees in Kupwara, while the mercury settled at minus 4.8 degrees, against 3.3 degrees in Kokernag. |
