'Influential' medico eyeing post of Principal GMC Srinagar | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 24: An influential medico, who in the past was accused of having "tainted service record", is lobbying hard in the corridors of power to be elevated as the Principal of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar. Sources said the medico, who in the past remained under scanner as head of the Children's Hospital here has managed to "cultivate strong relations with some of the PDP leaders and ministers, who have assured him that he will be the next Principal of the GMC very soon." The chair the Principal GMC Srinagar is being presently held by Dr Kaiser Ahmed on "temporary basis". He was given the charge in December 2015. Officials said the government wants to elevate "its favourite" doctor as GMC Principal in the garb of a court order that the post be filled on permanent basis. "If the post is to be filled on permanent basis, the government should formally advertise it. Let the best of the doctors apply for the post and selection be held on the basis of merit than favouritism," said a delegation of doctors. They said it was only because of favouritism in selection of Principal GMC that the medical college has been losing sheen over the years. "There was a time when GMC Srinagar was amongst the best medical colleges in the country, but now the same has been ruined due to years of favouritism," the doctors said. The doctors questioned that if post of Director SKIMS is advertised, why not the same yardstick for the Principal GMC. The medicos said they had recently given a representation to the Chief Minister's Secretariat to consider their "genuine request of holding interviews for the post." "But there seem to be no takers for sincere suggestions in this government," the medicos said. Meanwhile, the Health Minister and the MoS Health didn't respond to phone calls. But sources close to the junior minister for Health said the government has decided to elevate the "influential" medico as the GMC within a fortnight. "Basically even though the health ministry lies with BJP, as a matter of internal adjustment PDP has been given powers to decide on fate of GMC Srinagar. And let's not forget that the MOS Health is from the PDP," the official said, asking not to be named. |
