Jammu, Dec 24 : First additional sessions judge, Jammu, M A Chowdhary today rejected the bail applications of two accused in NDPS Act. Rejecting the bail applications of Lakchhman Kumar Tandon, son of Hari Dass Tandon of Chhatisgarh, and Sahil Sharma, who were booked by different police stations in alleged smuggling of ganja, the judge, after hearing the APP, observed that the illegal business of drugs was the third largest in the world. "Drug addiction causes immense human distress and the illegal production and distribution of drugs have spawned crime and violence worldwide. No part of the world is free from the curse of drug trafficking and drug addiction. Millions of drug addicts all over the world are leading miserable lives between life and death. Drug abuse is a complex phenomenon, which has various social, cultural, biological, geographical, historical and economic aspects. Drug abuse has led to a detrimental impact on the society. It has led to increase in the crime rate. With most drug users being in the productive age, the loss in terms of human potential is incalculable. The prevalence of drug abuse can be judged from the trends reflected by the survey on the extent, pattern and trends of drug abuse in India jointly released by United Nations Office of Drug and Crime (UNODC) and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, which revealed that India's population had twice the global number of drug abusers. Cases against drug peddlers indicate interstate drug rackets targeting school kids as well. The illicit drugs have a high addiction potential and there is gradual increase in their intake, getting the users dependent on them, both physically and psychologically. The compulsive drug seeking and use, on addiction, causes chronic brain disease changing the brain, its structure and how it works. The deadly menace, a major problem of the society, requires to be checked through strengthening the reinforcement," the court said. With these observations, the court rejected the bail application of both the accused.(JNF) |
