Sena outsmarts BJP | | | Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) indulging in a stunt to grab power in Maharashtra has left the party red-faced as Devendra Fadnavis, who was sworn in as the Chief Minister during the early hours of Saturday had to eat a humble pie after Supreme Court asked him to prove his majority and go for the floor test. Soon after the Supreme Court's decision, the NCP rebel Ajit Pawar, who was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra alongside Fadnavis, tendered his resignation paving way for the BJP leader to call it quits. BJP's attempt to form a government in Maharashtra in a hurry evoked sharp criticism from every quarter as it was proved beyond doubt that saffron party was short of numbers and it was banking upon horse trading but it failed to break any of the parties which had come together. Soon after Fadnavis took oath speculations started making rounds that Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress will break but it didn't happen. The NCP MLAs who had accompanied Ajit Pawar to Governor's House also backed away and accused junior Pawar of cheating them. Fadnavis could cling on to chair just for 88 hours. His second term as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra ended within a short span causing major embarrassment to his party which had started believing that it has emerged as an invincible force and no one can challenge it. Soon after poll results were announced in Maharashtra, BJP's pre-poll alliance partner Shiv Sena demanded Chief Minister's post for two and a half years. However, BJP turned down the demand and categorically stated that it had made no such promise to Uddhav Thakeray before the polls. The top leadership of BJP remained firm on its stand that Shiv Sena will have to act as a junior partner in the alliance. However, Sena surprised everyone by entering into a deal with Congress and NCP through the grand old man of Maharashtra politics, Sharad Pawar, who eventually has proved to be a "kingmaker". BJP leaders are screaming at the top of their voice that Sena has betrayed the mandate of the people with joining hands with the Congress and NCP and has compromised with its ideology. But politically Sena has made a smart move. Now instead of two and half years Sena will hold the CM's post for five years. Sena has outsmarted BJP which had nothing up its sleeve, after going for a late night coup to keep Shiv Sena out of power.
