'Accepting NC mandate would have humiliated me' | Day after leaving NC, Sheikh Ghulam Rasool joins PDP | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 6 : A day after saying goodbye to the ruling National Conference former Chief Secretary Sheikh Ghulam Rasool and his son Sheikh Gowhar joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today. Sources told Early Times that former Chief Secretary, who left theb National Conference after 20-years, was offered mandate by the party to contest from Ganderbal constituency. Insiders said that last month, five NC leaders Abdul Rahim Rather, Ali Muhammad Sagar, Mian Altaf, Muhammad Akbar Lone and Devender Singh Rana met the Sheikh Ghulam Rasool at his Ganderbal residence and suggested that he should contest from the constituency but the veteran leaders turned down their proposal politely. Sources said the veteran leader told the NC leaders that "dismal performance" of the party in the constituency during the past six years has annoyed the masses and it won't be feasible for him to contest the polls. The former Chief Secretary who played a pivotal role in ensuring the win of Omar Abdullah from the constituency in 2008 had mentioned in his resignation letter that during the past 6-years he was "sidelined" by the party leadership and he was never consulted. "I had the privilege to be what you described as architect of your success in Ganderbal in 2008 with landslide majority as against the humiliating defeat of 2002," the veteran leader had mentioned in his resignation letter. Sources claimed that Ishfaq was offered mandate only after he refused to accept it. In his resignation letter the former NC leader had mentioned about the mandate offered to him by the party leadership. Sheikh Ghulam Rasool said: "Five leaders approached me on the directions of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. I declined their offer to contest from Ganderbal as I know the mood of the people in the constituency. It would have been a humiliation for me, if I would have accepted their offer." However, Sheikh ishfaq Jabbar said that he was surprised to know that party had offered mandate to Shiekh Ghulam Rasool. "I fail to understand why party leaders had offered mandate for Ganderbal to him when it was already decided in Nov 2013 that I will be the party candidate from Ganderbal." "The statement of the veteran leader is surprising, but I respect him and will always hold him in high esteem," he added. Former Chief Secretary, who joined the PDP today in presence of the party patron Mufti Muhammad Sayeed said, " PDP by way of its pro-people policies is the only viable regional alternative for the people of the state." He said the ruling government has failed to do anything good for the people of Kashmir except strengthening the instrument of oppression to unleash terror on them. Sheikh said PDP is the only party having a clear agenda for the betterment of the youth, state. Expressing hope in the leadership of the PDP, he said he has decided to join the party due to its pro-people and revolutionary policies. He said the Jammu and Kashmir is presently passing through the difficult times and it is only credible leadership of the PDP which not only can ensure the lasting peace in the region but will take the state to new heights of development and prosperity. |
