Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 6: Even though the government has put all the separatists behind the bars, the election fever is yet to grip the valley. The major political parties , of course, are holding election rallies on daily basis but the enthusiasm is still missing. As expected the election rallies of ruling National Conference are competitively dull and do not enthuse the people. While Peoples Democratic Party is eyeing on North Kashmir, NC on the contrary is trying to challenge Mufti's in South Kashmir. However, the enthusiasm is still missing among the voters for a host of reasons. Many people are yet to recover from the devastation caused by the floods. Though a large section of population is looking forward to use their adult franchise but because of the sufferings inflicted by the devastating floods, the enthusiasm is not there. "I will definitely vote and vote for change, however, the impact of the devastating floods of September is very deep in my mind" said Jahangir Ahmad of Mehjoor Nagar in Srinagar. In rural Kashmir, the horticulture and agriculture produce suffered a colossal damage due to floods. It is because of this that the electorate is not much enthused as yet. Political observers, however, believe that the election fever may go up in the coming days. "Let the big giants Mufti Sayed, G N Azad and Dr. Farooq Abdullah begin their tours formally, You will see a sea change in the mood of the public" said Masud Husain, senior journalist. Masud said the campaigning will pick up in the coming days and also the public mood. Though opposition PDP is very upbeat, the morale in NC camp is apparently very low. On the other hand smaller parties like CPI (M), PDF and Peoples conference are posing real challenge to PDP in about 8 assembly segments. So if NC is not so upbeat, the smaller parties are likely to give tough fight to PDP in some pockets. But the general perception is that PDP is going to emerge as the ultimate winner in valley. This perception is likely to impact the prospects of smaller parties too. |
