6 reductions in diesel, petrol prices but passenger fare remains unchanged | Transporters making hay, traffic authorities in slumber | | Javaid Naikoo
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 6: At a time when oil companies have reduced prices of diesel and petrol for six times since August last, passenger vehicles' fare continues to be unchanged. The authorities are unconcerned about it as a result of which transporters continue to make hay. The fresh price cut in this regard was made by oil companies on October 31 with Rs 2.41 a litre price cut on petrol and Rs 2.25 on diesel across the country. While the cumulative reduction in petrol price has been Rs 9.36 per litre, the rate of diesel was decreased second time in October, which include price cut of Rs 3.37 and 2.41. But surprisingly, passenger vehicle operators have not reduced their fares. "We were expecting change in fares after price cut in diesel but it has not happened so far. No transporter would ever like to change the fare menu. It is the duty of RTOs and other concerned authorities," said Showkat Ahmad, a transporter of Srinagar. Pertinently the government had on October 18 freed diesel prices from its control, giving freedom to oil marketing companies to adjust rates in line with cost and on that day, rates were cut by Rs 3.37 per litre, which was the first reduction in price of diesel in the last over five years as the previous decline dates back to January 2009. According to transporters, the consecutive price cut in diesel had increased their income since August 2014 and there was every possibility of decreasing the fares to provide some kind of relief to commuters. Like oil Prices, the price of non-subsidized cooking gas (LPG) was cut by Rs 18.5 to Rs 865 per 14.2-kg cylinder and since August, this was the fourth reduction in rate of non-subsidized LPG which consumers buy after exhausting their quota of sub-market priced domestic cooking gas. Despite these cuts in price, there was no relief to people buying non subsidized LPG cylinders due to their alleged black marketing and official apathy. Talking to Early Times, some commuters said with the price cut in diesel twice in last one month, the concerned authorities must now change the passenger fare. Despite repeated attempts, no contact could be made with RTO, Kashmir, and other concerned officials of transport department. |
