Srinagar, Nov 6: Like National Conference (NC) patron Farooq Abdullah, who remained surrounded by controversies after age difference was found in his polling affidavit during Lok Sabha elections, NC candidate from Bandipora is likely to face wrath of Election Commission of India (ECI) due to the age difference found in his polling affidavits.
According to officials, there has been a difference of age of NC leader and Higher Education Minister Mohammad Akbar Lone. In his election affidavit filed before the returning officer for Sonawari assembly segment in North Kahsmir's Bandipora district on November 3, he has shown his age as 67 years while in 2008 Assembly elections, after which he enjoyed the portfolio of legislative Assembly Speaker, for nearly four years from 2009 to 2013, he had declared his age as 63 years in his affidavit. If the 2008 affidavit is taken as correct, his age should have been 69 years by now.
Akbar Lone also seems to have lost some property assets since 2008 as according to his previous affidavit he had declared ownership of 5.6 hectares of land and five residential houses in various parts of the state and accordingly his total worth then was Rs 3.5 crore. In the latest affidavit, he has shown land assets as 4.75 hectares and ownership of four houses only and his properties were now valued at Rs 7.40 crore but the bank deposits if considered true have increased considerably from Rs 30,000 in 2008 to Rs 7.5 lakh at present.
Pertinently Farooq had remained in controversies over his difference of age in polling affidavit this year when he had filed nomination papers for Lok Sabha elections in which he had declared his age as 66 years in the affidavit during the 2008 assembly elections but mentioned it as 77 years in the affidavit submitted along with his nomination papers for Lok Sabha elections in April 2014.
Akbar Lone earlier remained in headlines for his remarks against Peoples democratic party (PDP) President and MP Mehbooba Mufti and for an exchange of abusive language with former PDP leader Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari who passed away recently.
According to reports, age difference was also found in polling affidavits of some Congress leaders of Ladakh who filed nomination papers recently and it is believed that ECI may look into the matter thoroughly before issuing green signal to all such leaders for contesting the upcoming assembly elections in the state.
