PDP makes BJP play role of opposition | | | Kunal Shrivatsa Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 7: Even as the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) is a partner of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the coalition government in J&K, the political developments in the first six days after new dispensation took over the reins of power in the state has virtually forced the saffron party to play its old role of an opposition party. With PDP raking up some of the contentious issues like handing over of Afzal Guru's mortal remains to his family and the proposed rehabilitation policy for the militants one after the another, the BJP is certainly on back foot and not amused by the rhetoric of its coalition partner due to which some of its leaders have come out in open to oppose the controversial subjects. While BJP MLA from Nowshera Assembly constituency, Ravindra Raina expressed his anger and resentment against the purported rehabilitation policy for the militants and the release of political prisoners languishing in different jails of the state for years together. The other day MLA Ravindra Raina while speaking to media persons categorically stated that BJP will never allow the implementation of the rehabilitation policy for militants and political convicts. Clearly agitated over the government as it was quite visible while different Television News Channels aired his sound bite on Friday, Raina went on to say that BJP would thwart any such move being initiated by the state government as such a decision is an insult to the sacrifices made by thousands of martyrs who laid down their precious lives for the integrity and sovereignty of the country "The BJP strongly condemns the release of militants or separatists until the sentence accorded to them is completed," Raina said. "The policy of surrender and rehabilitation of militants will be an insult to the nationalist people of Jammu and Kashmir," he added. MLA Raina was reacting to Mufti's statements on Thursday, directing the state police to initiate the release of all political prisoners. However, Raina's opposition to rehabilitation policy proved to be a dud as the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed led PDP-BJP government went ahead with its announcement today and ordered release of Hurriyat Conference (Geelani) leader and Muslim League president Masrat Alam Bhat, who was languishing in jail since October 18, 2010. In almost similar tone and tenor, the BJP MLA from Kathua Assembly segment, Rajeev Jasrotia opposed the demand of some PDP MLAs who had sought handing over the mortal remains of Afzal Guru, the key collaborator of the Pakistani jihadis who attacked Parliament on December 13, 2001, was hanged on February 9, 2013 in Tihar Jail in New Delhi. MLA Rajeev Jasrotia while addressing a press conference in Kathua on March 4 last told reporters that BJP will never allow the handing over mortal remains of Afzal Guru. |
