Corrupt officials may lose jobs, out of turn promotees under scanner | Mufti kick starts operation cleanup | | Fazal Khan ET Report SRINAGAR, Mar 7: The Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed announcing war against corruption is giving sleepless nights to the corrupt officials and the people who managed to get out of turn promotions during the erstwhile NC-Congress regime. Sources told Early Times that the Chief Minister has asked all the heads of departments to prepare a list of officers who were involved in "corrupt practices" and submit it to the Chief Minister's Secretariat for scrutiny and follow up action. The directions of the Chief Minister, according to the sources, have created ripples among the rank and file of the officials across the length and breadth of Jammu and Kashmir. "There are speculations that new dispensation is contemplating to take stern action including terminating the services of the officials involved in corruption," sources said. They said many officials who were given out of turn promotions during the erstwhile NC-Cong regime are likely to face the axe and may end up losing the plum positions. "Anti-corruption agencies have been asked to keep a close vigil over the offices which had turned into hubs of corruption during the past six years," sources said. "Officers who were not transferred due to their political clout are likely to be sent to cells." The new government is mulling to empower the anti-corruption agencies in the state and clear instructions would be passed to the officials of these agencies to act against anyone from top to bottom without any fear. "The Chief Minister would personally monitor the functioning of the anti-corruption agencies,' sources said. "During the erstwhile NC-Cong regime, many big fishes escaped without any action due to the undue political interference. The anti-corruption agencies in the state had become the tools in the hands of politicians and their role had got confined to laying traps around low rung officials," said a source. He said these agencies had almost become defunct during the past six years. "Since the day new government has taken over the reins of the state things have started moving and it looks like anti-corruption agencies would play a major role in coming days," the source added. He said that top officials of the State Vigilance Organization (SVO) and Crime Branch have been asked to prepare a list of the officers with a clean track record. "We have heard that special teams would be formed to conduct surprise checks of the various departments and to keep a vigil over the functioning of the officials," the source added. The Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, according to the sources, has asked his ministers to conduct a thorough exercise before attending the cabinet meeting likely to be held next week. "Besides showing door to the corrupt officials the new regime is likely to devise a comprehensive transfer policy and appoint honest at upright officials at the important positions," sources added. They said the government would also direct all the heads of the departments to ensure implementation of Right to Information (RTI) Act in letter and spirit so that maximum information could be made available on the website to minimize the need for filing RTI applications by the citizens. Sources said that Chief Minister has made it clear to his cabinet colleagues that key posts would be given to the honest and upright officers and no one would be given any position due to his political approach. |
