Why PDP lost 4 South Kashmir seats ? | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 7 : Startling revelations about a senior PDP leader from Anantnag who provided financial support to the Congress candidates to defeat his own party men, have shook the party loyals in South Kashmir. Well informed sources told Early Times that a senior PDP leader of Anantnag reportedly provided financial support to at least two Congress candidates in South Kashmir to ensure defeat of his own party men in the elections held in December last year. They said though former MP and NC leader, Dr. Mehboob Beg deserted his party after he was nominated as the party candidate from Anantnag constituency, a senior PDP leader had a secret deal with at least two Congress candidates as he wanted to ensure defeat of his own party candidates in the elections. They said though infighting was evident even before the elections, however, the senior PDP leader secretly helped the Congress leaders at least financially and ensured the defeat of the PDP candidates. According to the sources, the Congress candidates had some sort of understanding with the PDP leader since 2002. It merits a mention here that PDP suffered extensive electoral damage in Anantnag and Kulgam districts by losing four seats, two each to NC and Congress which was quit disturbing for the party leadership. Even though reports suggest that the party lost four seats of Pahalgam, Shangus, Devsar and Homeshalibugh due to various reasons with internal bickering as one of the factors. Though its MLAs representing the aforementioned constituencies in the last assembly had done a remarkable job but some wrong decisions about creation of new administrative units backfired on them at least in Pahalgam and Devsar constituencies. It is also being said that the former MLAs of Devsar, Homeshalibugh, Pahalgam, and Shangus constituencies were missing on ground during devastating September floods which also led to their defeat against the rival candidates who were politically not so strong. Reports further suggest that all the four PDP leaders who lost either to NC or Congress were overconfident which again went against them. However, the latest revelations that a senior PDP leader from Anantnag even worked hard against his own party leaders could be the additional factor that led humiliating defeat of the party on four seats in Anantnag and Kulgam districts. Reports said that the PDP candidates were sounded by some people in the administration, however, they didn't give any heed to their advise. Meanwhile, a senior PDP leader from Anantnag district contested the reports saying that it was actually the overconfidence of our candidates which went against them. Wishing anonymity the PDP leader said that there was no infighting in the PDP camp in South Kashmir and that the people had full faith in PDP leadership and its agenda. The PDP leader, however, added that some local factors could be attributed to the defeat of PDP candidates in Anantnag and Kulgam districts. "There is always a race for going high and growing stronger among the political workers, that cannot be ruled out but one party candidate facilitating the defeat of his own party candidates is out of question" said the PDP leader. On providing financial support to opposite candidates, the PDP leader said, "I don't think we have any leader who is in a position to give money to others, in Anantnag we are all from a humble background and don't have even money to spend on our own expenditure.
