Faiz Ahmed Faiz daughter's visit leaves Kashmir media embarrassed | No news coverage, paid advertisement carried by Srinagar dailies | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 23: In what has left the media houses in Kashmir red-faced, the Srinagar dailies failed to offer any free coverage to the Kashmir visit of daughter of famed poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz and instead only carried a paid advertisement. While the Government College For Women MA Road here was courteous enough to host the visiting personality, Srinagar dailies failed to reciprocate. This is despite the fact that the visiting lady had assured to offer assistance to the college. The issue has sparked a major debate on social networking websites with Ayaz Rasool Nazki, a noted writer, playing the whistleblower for having noticed the advertisement in the newspapers. "What has happened to our newspapers? Such an important event has to be published as a paid advertisement!" he asked while posting picture of the advertisement on Facebook. Academician Indu Kilam reacted saying "Breaking News". Former bureaucrat Irfan Yasin said "That tells volumes about literary priorities here. Wasay Be Iss News Mai Koi Mirch Masala Nahin." RTI activist and Aam Aadmi Party leader Raja Muzaffar Bhat said "So Sad." The advertisement titled "Press Note" said "The College had the honor of welcoming the daughter of an eminent poet of Urdu Faiz Ahmed Faiz, in its premises on 17th of June, 2015. Pertinently, in 1941 the Nikah Ceremony of the legendary poet had taken place in one of the rooms of the main building housing the college library. The room has been named as Gosh-e-Faiz in the memory of the poet." "Moneeza Hashmi, daughter of the legendary poet while visiting the Gosh-e-Faiz turned emotional and thanked the college administration for valuing the contribution of her father. Moneeza Hashmi promised to facilitate the college library with journals, and translations from Fiaz Foundation Trust, Lahore Pakistan. The principal staff and the students thank the revered guest for visiting the institution," the advertisement from college Principal Shaheen Altaf reads. A prominent poet said at a time when Srinagar dailies claims to be working hard on revival of literary taste in trouble torn Kashmir, the visit of Moneeza has punctured their claims. "Srinagar dailies should take a cue from Jammu dailies who ensure that literary issues are highlighted on priority even if they pertain to regional languages like Dogri," said the Kashmiri poet. Born in 1911, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, who bagged Lenin Peace Prize was an influential left-wing intellectual, revolutionary poet, and one of the most highly-regarded poets of the Urdu language, having been nominated four times for the Nobel Prize for literature. Faiz also wrote poetry in the Punjabi language. A notable member of the Progressive Writers' Movement (PWM), Faiz was an avowed Marxist, for which he received the Lenin Peace Prize by the Soviet Union in 1962. He was repeatedly accused of atheism by the Pakistani political and military establishment, reports added. |
