For a change Mirwaiz plays 'Good Boy', stays away from protests | Hurriyat M cadres act more loyal than the king, face detention | | Early Times Report srinagar, June 23: Acting more loyal than the King, the cadres of Hurriyat Conference-M might have planned to visit restive Kulgam over killing of two militants and a civilian there and got detained midway, but their Chairman and senior separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq volunteered to stay away from the protests and enjoyed freedom. This is not any hypothetical assumption but the crux of two back-to- back statements issued by the Hurriyat Conference-M today. One handout said Hurriyat M leaders were put under house arrest, otherwise they would have visited Kulgam to protest the killing of "freedom fighters (militants)". But the other handout said that Mirwaiz was free to move around and that instead of visiting the area on boil, he volunteered to address a gathering in Eidgah area of Srinagar. "Addressing a gathering at Hanfia Wangan Pora , Iddgah Srinagar, APHC Chairman Mirwaiz Dr Molvi Muhammad Umar Farooq "sternly condemned the killing of civilian Asif Ahmad by government forces and pulverizing of the scores of houses by using indiscriminate fire power." "He said the incident of killing and razing to ground public property should be thoroughly probed by an independent investigating agency," the party handout said. "Terming the physical assault on residents of Redwani Kulgam, ransacking of shops, and destroying of public property as an open display of state sponsored terrorism, APHC Chairman sternly condemned the highhandedness of government forces against the people." The other handout said that the party cadres were detained otherwise they would have raised a hue and cry over the killings including those of militants. "The All Parties Hurriyat Conference spokesman has sternly condemned the house arrest of Advocate Shahid-ul-Islam, arrest of senior Hurriyat leader Mukhtar Ahmad Waza and of another senior leader Javaid Ahmad Mir who have been lodged in Sherbagh and Mahraj Gunj Police Stations respectively," the handout said. "Mukhtar Waza and Javaid Ahmad Mir were arrested by the police late last night and detained in the police stations. The Hurriyat leaders were scheduled to visit to Redwani Kulgam to express solidarity with the bereaved families of the two freedom fighters(militants) and one civilian," the handout said. "The spokesman has described the action of the authorities as highly fascist and undemocratic," the party said. A senior official said it was a welcome step that Mirwaiz acted wisely like a "good boy". "If separatists shun their tough stand,we too will show flexibility because this is how things should go in a democratic setup," the official said. On June 22 tow militants and a civilian were killed in a firing there. The slain civilian was identified as Asif Rashid Tantray (24) son of Abdur Rashid of Redwani Bala village. Locals as well as the family of Asif alleged he was killed in cold-blood, but police claimed a "stray bullet" hit him during an encounter between militants and government forces in the village. |
