Kupwara Aug 11: The ban on extraction of stones, boulders and sand from streams in this frontier district in valley seemed to be thrown in air which is taking toll of health of ecology of the region as local claimed the alleged unholy nexus of stone crushers and authorities concerned ha sresulting illegal practice going on unabated at various spots in Kupwara, Lolab, Kehmil and Mawar localities.
Irked over the sonorous sound and dust billowing in atmosphere, the locals said the illegal practice has not only affected agricultural activities but also disturbed the water level in these local streams which is surprisingly decreasing, leading to shortage of irrigation and drinking water.
"Not only this the dust coming out of these stone crushers is also ending up in health hazards to local and the workers employed at these stone crushers in the area, some locals alleged while adding, " the children and aged are suffering from chest diseases.'
Locals alleged that heavy vehicles including tippers, tractors and JCB machinea were mainly used by contractors for extraction of sand and boulders from the streams and transported to other areas in the district and created noise and air pollution during their working of six to eight hours daily but authorities are in slumber.
"Some years ago, there were dozens of springs and streams flowing through this area. Now the water level is decreasing in these streams due to illegal extraction of sand and boulders," said one Zubair Ahmad, a local resident resenting the callous approach of the concerned authorities.
"Besides, this indiscriminate extraction is disintegrating rocks in the nullahs, making the low-lying residential areas more prone to floods," he said.
Locals said that the gift of Mother Nature to villagers (mankind) is being plundered at nullah Kehmil and Mawar nullha in Handwara tehsils where stone crusher owners are extracting sand, stones and boulders indiscriminately which is ravaging the ecology of the area and aqua-fauna.
