'We have our own view on Kashmir issue'
PDP needs to rein in Akhtar
8/11/2015 11:55:14 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 11: Spokesman of the PDP-BJP coalition government and Education Minister Naeem Akhtar the other day did well to slam Pakistan for its refusal to invite Speaker of the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly to participate in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference starting on September 30 at Islamabad. "Pakistan's decision is an unfortunate one and it is unacceptable for us," he said. The upshot of his whole argument was that "we are the only elected representatives of the people and it is our right to participate in such conferences".
However, he crossed the red-line when he said that Pakistan had its own stand on the Kashmir issue, India had its own and Jammu & Kashmir Government had its own. "We are here as we bagged 80 per cent votes from people; nobody can doubt that. There is an Indian point of view, Pakistan's point of view and our (Jammu & Kashmir Government's) point of view on Kashmir issue," he said on the sidelines of a seminar in Srinagar.
What he said was the state government's view and what he said should leave none in any doubt that the Jammu & Kashmir Government represented the third point of view on the political status of the State of Jammu & Kashmir. In other words, what he said as the official spokesperson of the state government unambiguously suggested that Jammu & Kashmir was not part of the Indian nation and that it was an independent entity which was entitled to have its own point of view on the national unity and country's sovereignty.
How could the Jammu & Kashmir Government have a point of view different from that of New Delhi? Neither the Jammu & Kashmir Constitution of 1957, nor the Constitution of India of 1950 grants the power to the Jammu & Kashmir Government to say what the spokesperson of the state government said. Both the Constitutions say, and say unambiguously, that Jammu & Kashmir is and shall ever remain an integral part of India and no state government can interfere in matters concerning the territorial integrity of India and its sovereignty.
It was hoped that the BJP - which has lost its sheen and appeal and become extremely unpopular in Jammu region by betraying the Jammu mandate, as also by becoming B-team of the Kashmiri party - would tear into the spokesperson of the state government and rebut what he said against New Delhi, but it didn't happen. It ignored the abominable and outrageous suggestion of Naeem Akhtar, thus suggesting that the BJP had abandoned its nationalist ideology and, like all other fake secular outfits, the BJP also shares the sinister view that Jammu & Kashmir is not an integral part of India like other states of the Union.
One can only hope that Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed would intervene, rein in Naeem Akhtar, who has gone beyond the constitutional confines, and set the record straight by saying that the point of view of the state government on the "Kashmir issue" is the same as that of New Delhi. It is a must. As for the BJP, it also needs to play a responsible role. People of Jammu & Kashmir have not given the mandate to any party in the state to play with national unity and strengthen the hands of anti-nationals like Geelani, Mirwaiz, Malik, Shah and so on.
