Nirmal Singh terms all ex-ministers as 'scamsters' | Attacks his colleague without identifying him | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 11: The recent statement of Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh in which he launched a veiled attack on one of the senior minister's of his own party has raised eyebrows. Nirmal didn't name any person in his interview with a local daily here, but he said every minister of the past regimes was a 'scamster' who was involved either in scandals or serious scams, which went unnoticed and unheard earlier. Though Nirmal was training guns on the previous governments, his guarded attack against a leader who was also a minister in the Congress-led coalition government from 2005-2008, is seen by many within the incumbent PDP-BJP coalition as a calculated move in which two birds were hit by a single stone. "I don't find any minister in the previous government who was not involved in any scandal or a scam. So that is legacy we have got and we are trying to correct that first," Nirmal said. Political pundits in the state are of the opinion that Nirmal's attack was more or less aimed at a BJP minister, as both continue to share bitter relations despite being ministers in the government and belonging to same political party. As Nirmal termed every past minister "corrupt and crooked", the story goes back to April 1, 2011 when BJP lawmakers caused an uproar in the Legislative Assembly against then Congress Minister accusing him of encroaching upon 324 kanals of land. The BJP MLAs on that day displayed, what they termed an official document, saying the names of two Congress ministers figured in it as land encroachers. "When the government is taking action against bureaucrats and other employees, why it's not acting against politicians? The government should take action against the politicians who have encroached the land," Sapolia, a BJP MLA, had said at that point of time on the floor of the House. Later, Sapolia handed over the official document carrying names of two Congress ministers to then Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone. Also, reports surfaced in May this year over strained relation between Nirmal Singh and a senior BJP minister. There were reports that the tussle between the two ministers was taking toll on the administration and that the two BJP ministers lock horns very often. There was even a spat witnessed between the two ministers and the issue dominated the cabinet meet in which major reshuffle in the civil administration was ordered in May 2015. Both the ministers at that time traded charges against each other. While their colleagues watched in amusement, the duo accused each other of being ignorant of the ground situation. |
