Donated land for school to get Rs 25 per month Bandipora sweeper awaits ‘Acchey Din’ 8/20/2015 11:31:48 PM Early Times Reoprt Kashmir, Aug 20: At a time when India is claiming overall development, exploitation of weaker sections of the society continues unabated. Muhammad Subhan Wani, who was employed as a sweeper in 1988 in a school in Jammu and Kashmir on a monthly salary of Rs 25, retired in 2005 with the same salary. Moreover, his son joined the same job in his place on the same monthly salary - Rs 25. When Wani joined the Government Middle School, Chak Arsulla Khan, Bandipora in 1988, he had hoped of a decent earning for his family. Ironically, Subhan was the person who donated land for the school on a promise of employment and compensation. According to a BBC report, he was also promised jobs for his sons and a good salary hike. However, he was never given any compensation and his salary never increased. "In 1988, I was asked for my land to setup the middle school," says 64-year old Wani while showing the copies of his employment order dating back to 1988. Wani was appointed as Sweeper-Cum-Chowkidar (vide order No Accts/33-34, dated 04-04-1988) on a monthly salary of Rs 25 in 1988. Wani had to destroy walnut trees, which helped him earn a good amount each month, so that he could give the land for the school. However, his decision landed him in deep trouble. "I did not know I will be cheated like this." Wani also sought judicial help but he did not have enough money to fight the case in court. The matter has had an effect on his personal life too. "I was not educated enough to deal with the matter. My children are angry with me. Every child hopes that his/her father must have saved something for him/her but I just have Rs 25. How do I distribute it among them?" Wani's son Mumtaz Ahmed said even he has not received the salary of Rs 25 for the last two months.
