Moulana Azad Stadium: Glaring example of Government apathy | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 20: The Moulana Azad Stadium here is a glaring example of the government apathy and it being neglected by all the previous regimes. This vital stadium turning into a jungle has disappointed the budding sportsmen who could have brought laurels for the state. To start with the entire stadium is in shambles. It's without all the basic facilities. There are no synthetic tracks, no toilets and no proper sanitation facilities. "It's unfortunate that rulers have always turned a Nelson's eye towards this vital stadium. Had they paid a little attention towards developing this important stadium it would have produced a battery of sportspersons," said an athlete. Referring to the neighboring Himachal Pradesh state, the athlete said, "There are three synthetic tracks in Himachal Pradesh and sportsmen are provided all the facilities. Recently veteran talent Master's meet was held at Dharmshalla in Himacchal Pradesh. The ex-sportsmen from JK bagged 23 medals in the meet and proved their mettle." Another national sports event which was held at Alwar in Rajasthan, the athletes from JK bagged 22 medals. "It's unfortunate that despite sportsmen bringing laurels for the state, the Jammu and Kashmir government has not taken a single step to encourage them. It's really unfortunate and sad," said a veteran sportsperson. Insiders revealed that the Generator which is meant to illuminate the ground has been gathering dust for years together as the administration has no funds to arrange the Diesel for the DG set. "The mobile toilets which were set up are in shambles. The overgrown grass present inside the stadium has turned it into a mini Jungle. Young and old athletes who come for practice put their lives at stake as the ground has turned into safe haven for snakes and other deadly species," they said, adding that irony is that people at the helm have never paid any heed towards developing the synthetic track in the M A Stadium. Insiders said that when National Conference and Congress were at the helm the then sports minister Raman Bhalla had sanctioned a building for the stadium but that announcement remained confined to papers only. "We don't need a building. We need other facilities so that we are able to compete at national and international level," they added. Athletes are hoping that new PDP-BJP government would not turn a blind eye towards the M A Stadium and would rebuild it. "Our state has got lot of talent it needs to be harnessed. It's astounding that JK is the only state where not much attention is paid towards the budding athletes and the sportsmen while as in other states sports persons are provided all the facilities," said an athlete. "We are not asking for moon and stars we are demanding a decent ground where we can practice and can invite teams from other states to compete with us," he added. |
