Health care 'ailing' in Kupwara | | | S.Tahir-Ul Haq
Early Times Report
KUPWARA, Aug 20: Health care in Kupwara district of north Kashmir is in a shambles, adding to sufferings of the people. Local residents said key sections like health and family welfare and immunization of the Health Department in the district exist on papers only. Patients brought to New Type Primary Health Centers (NTPHC) and Sub District Hospitals (SDH) are referred to District Hospital (DH) Handwara even for minor ailments, the residents said. They said that in the past when some local citizens apprised the civil administration officials about the mess in the health sector, the officials ignore the issue and sought to shield the corrupt employees of the Health Department. The residents cited the example of SDH Zachaldara, where doctors attend their duties thrice a week and remain absent for rest of the week. "Sometimes the pharmacist examines patients and prescribes medicines to them without telling the latter that he is not a doctor," the people said. Also, there are machines like ECGs but no technicians to run them. The clinical laboratory tests are missing while machines worth crores are defunct in the absence of requisite manpower to run them. "Postings and transfers of doctors to Kupwara are made on the recommendations of local politicians. A number of posts of doctors and paramedics are vacant for a long time. The politicians ensure that their kin and relatives of their workers do not serve in far-flung areas of the district. If a local doctor is not willing to work in Kupwara, why should we expect a doctor from Srinagar or Anantnag to work here," the people said. |
