Separatists detained, released | | | Bashir Assad Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug20; In a dramatic turn of events the state government early Thursday ordered detention of Kashmiri Separatist leaders ahead of their meeting with Pakistan's National Security Adviser in New Delhi. However, two hours later all the separatists were released. In what could be termed a high drama that unfolded today, the state government first arrested the separatist leaders including JKLF chief Yasin Malik, however, barely after two hours, all the separatist leaders who were detained or put under house arrest were set free reportedly after a senior PDP leader intervened. First the government ordered the detention of the separatist leaders in an apparent move to debar them from meeting visiting Pakistani NSA Sartaj Aziz in New Delhi ahead of the talks. However, two hours later in a dramatic move, they were released reportedly on intervention of the senior PDP leader. Even though police claimed that the separatists were released to maintain law and order. Pertinently, Hurriyat hardliner Sayeed Ali Shah Geelani was not allowed to move out of his Hyderpora residence this morning while as Yasin Malik was arrested from his Maisuma residence and was detained at Kothibagh police station. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest at his Nigeen residence. Another separatist leader, Moulana Abbas Ansari, too was put under house arrest. "Houses of other Hurriyat leaders Javaid Ahmad Mir and my residence were raided by police early morning," Shahid-ul-Islam, secretary of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, said. In the morning the J&K police put up stop gates and deployed police personnel outside the houses before informing the separatist leaders not to step out. Pertinently the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi has invited Kashmiri separatist leaders for a meeting with Aziz on the evening of August 23 at Pakistan Embassy. Sources said that the Pakistan High Commissioner would host a dinner for the separatists n Sunday in which Pakistan NSA, Sartaj Aziz would be present.
