Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Sept 12: Normal life was virtually thrown out of gear in the summer capital of state and other parts of Kashmir valley due to a strike call given by the separatists against the recent High Court order banning sale of beef in the state.
Reports reaching here said that the strike evoked complete response in the Srinagar city and most of the districts as well as towns of Kashmir. At the same time for the second consecutive day protests broke out in some areas of the valley with some of the bovine animals also being slaughtered in some localities.
Since early morning scores of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel donning the riot gear could be seen patrolling the roads and streets in Srinagar and other districts in order to keep the protesters at bay. With the extra deployment of police and CRPF personnel it became difficult for the people to assemble and carry out protests against the High Court order.
However, groups of people assembled at many places in the valley and as such protests broke out at these places. Reports of protests have been received from Srinagar as well as other districts of Kashmir. In the Srinagar city reports of protests came from the Habba Kadal area in downtown.
Eye-witnesses told Early Times that a group of people pelted stones on CRPF personnel in the Habba Kadal area after the security forces personnel objected to the playing of cricket by the youth on the main road. The ding dong battle carried on for some time and by the evening the situation was normal. Clashes between police and protesters broke out in HMT area as well. However, no one was injured.
Authorities imposed restrictions in the areas falling under the six police stations of Maharaj Gunj, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Safa Kadal, Rainawari and Maisuma. The movement of people was restricted in the areas falling under these police stations. Extra deployment of forces was made in the Nowhatta Chowk near the Jamia Masjid since the area witnesses stone pelting on regular basis.
Due to the strike call and enforcement of restrictions life virtually came to a standstill in the summer capital of the state. Shops and commercial establishments remained closed in the city and its outskirts as well. Normal work was also affected to a great extent in the schools and colleges. The attendance in the government offices was very thin. While public transport was generally off the roads some of the private vehicles could be seen plying on the roads.
Separatist leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Mohammad Yasin Malik, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Engineer Hilal Ahmad War, Javed Ahmad Mir and Zaffar Akber Bhat were either arrested or put under house arrest by the authorities. The call for strike was given by the separatists and it was supported by Kashmir Bar Association along with some other religious as well as trade organizations.
Reports of clashes have also been received from Barsoo in Ganderbal, Narbal in Budgam, Palhallan-Pattan in Baramulla, KP Road in Anantnag and some other places of valley. At the same time it has been learnt that bovine animals were slaughtered at places like Barsoo, Bemina, Fruit Mandi in Parimpora, Zainakote in HMT, Rampora in Chattabal and Bonpora in Nowgam.
