1 lecturer for 700 students at GHSS Marmat | Education a joke in rural JK | | Bijay Charak Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 12: There's just one English lecturer for more than 700 students at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Marmat, Doda. The school is situated 43 kilometers from the district headquarters and is the only higher secondary which caters to around 42, 000 people of 14 panchyats. The lone lecturer for English teaches around 700 students. The school has only six permanent lecturers and five temporary appointees. "It's very difficult to concentrate when a single teacher teaches 700 students," said Rakesh Bhagat, a student. He said it's only the English subject where there is acute dearth of lecturers. There's one lecturer each for Math, Physics and Biology as well. "It is sheer injustice with the students who come to school in hope of quality education," said Rakesh, adding that a single teacher often takes a class comprising 140 students. A teacher told Early times that "we were facing a lot of problems due to shortage of staff as well as space. The school has only four small rooms." He said the school authorities conveyed their problem to the higher officials of the Education Department but to no avail. Ashfaq Ahmed, a resident of village Goha, said that the school education has become a joke in rural areas of Doda district where government schools are facing an acute shortage of staff. Chief Education Officer, Doda, Ajit Kumar Sharma did not return repeated calls from Early Times for his comment. |
