Coalition afraid of holding municipal, civic body polls

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 12: Though BJP has decided to contest all 26 seats in Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) polls next month, the coalition government is afraid of holding civic and municipal elections in the other two regions of the state which are overdue.
Unlike 2002 when Mufti Mohammed Sayeed took as Chief Minister with the help of Congress and announced municipal and civic body elections within a year, he has chosen to play safe this time.
According to sources, both PDP and BJP which are running a coalition in the state, are doubtful of their performance as the public opinion is not good about the two parties in both the regions.
BJP has won 26 seats from Jammu region with one independent and having a support of two People's Conference candidates from Valley and PDP too has 28 seats from both the regions with majority from Valley. Both parties are, however, reluctant to hold the civil and municipal elections due to obvious reasons, sources added.
Sources said previous coalition of Congress and NC also did not hold the elections during its six-year term and though the people had pinned high hopes in this government to take the democracy to grass root level by strengthening the its pillars, it has adopted a wait and watch policy.
Sources said the BJP which has swept the Assembly poll in Jammu region last year is not confident of maintaining the same record in local bodies and municipal elections this time. This is the reason that party is delaying the holding of the municipal elections, sources added.
Sources said likewise the PDP is also not sure of getting the majority in municipal and civic body elections in Kashmir Valley as public opinion is unfavorable this time.
To turn the public attention towards it, BJP is now leaving no stone unturned to win the LAHDC elections and this is the reason that party MP and MLCs donated over Rs 10 lakh for flood-hit people of Ladakh, sources said.
Sources said though it will be too premature to say whether BJP regains its position in Ladakh as party got a setback in last Assembly elections by losing all the seats from the region.
However shying away from holding the municipal and civic bodies elections in J&K has put a question mark on the democratic credentials of both the coalition partners who when in opposition had targeted NC-Congress for deliberately avoiding to hold these elections.
