North Kashmir also observes shutdown against court order banning sale of beef in J-K | | | S Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report BARAMULLA, Sept 12: Hundreds of people today blocked Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road at Pattan after which youth raised anti government slogans in Pattan Chowk and pelted stones on police personnel. Stone pelting started after sloganeering and the protesting youth were chased away. A complete shutdown was observed today across the North Kashmir districts after a Division Bench of High Court on Wednesday had passed an order banning the sale of beef in Jammu & Kashmir. Normal life in North Kashmir was affected on Saturday due to a strike call given by both the factions of Hurriyat Conference and JKLF against the court order banning the sale of beef in Jammu & Kashmir. According to reports stone-pelting incidents occurred in Pattan, Sopore and other parts of Bandipora and Kupwara districts. Scores of youth took to streets and engaged security forces throughout the day. Hundreds of men, women and children blocked Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road at Pattan after which youth raised anti government slogans in Pattan chowk and pelted stones on security forces personnel. Police and security forces personnel exercised maximum restraint and did not use force on the protesters. Reports said that clashes between protesters and security forces continued for hours. Similar reports of protests were also received from other parts of North Kashmir. Protest marches were taken out from Hajin, Sumbal and Bandipora where youth fought pitched battles with security forces, however in the afternoon protests culminated peacefully near Gulshan Chowk. It is learnt that, the protesters warned that if the ban on beef is not revoked, they will start an agitation. "We will not accept this Court order. It is direct interference in our religion and nobody has right to do so," said the protesters. It was observed that schools, colleges, shops and other business establishments remained closed in most parts of North Kashmir, while public transport remained off the roads due to the strike call. However, private vehicles were seen plying on the roads. Police sources said that some "miscreants" started stone pelting but they were chased away and the situation is normal in the town. Pertinently, a Division Bench of High Court Wednesday passed an order banning the sale of beef in Jammu and Kashmir.
