Will flag meeting ensure peace on IB? | | | While on one hand Pakistan has initiated moves to promote peace on the International Border in the Jammu sector, which witnessed fierce incidents of ceasefire violations in recent days, on the other it has raked up again the Kashmir issue in the United Nations. This indicates, beyond any doubt, duplicity on the part of Islamabad because New Delhi has made two things clear to Pakistan. One,India is ready to discuss all issues during bilateral talks once the atmosphere was free from terror and violence. Secondly, India has made it clear to Pakistan that Kashmir is nonnegotiable and what had to be discussed about the future of the state was the illegal occupation of part of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. However, till date Pakistan has remained obdurate and has refused to listen to reason from India. It seems that if Pakistan Rangers have initiated a flag meeting in Samba sector it is the result of furious retaliation from the BSF after Pakistani forces violated the ceasefire. Whatever may be the reason it is appreciable if Pakistan Rangers try for promoting peace. BSF) and Pakistan Rangers officers have met in Jammu region in a bid to maintain peace on the international border. A flag meeting was held in Samba sectoron Tuesday evening between the commanders of the BSF's 9th Battalion and the Rangers' 24th Battalion at a border outpost called Mangu Chack. This meeting was called by the Pakistani Rangers. The main objective of the meeting was to maintain a peaceful atmosphere along the international border and ensure that no one violates the 2003 ceasefire. What happened to the agreement that was reached between the DG BSF and the DG Rangers, during their meeting a month ago? Rangers violated the agreement. And when Pakistan raked up the Kashmir issue and said that once the UN resolutions on Kashmir were implemented it would guarantee peace in the entire South Asian region, India has asserted that Islamabad's unabated support to terror groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir is the main challenge to safeguard human rights of its citizens in the State. Pakistan's continued support for terror groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir is the main challenge to protecting the human rights of civilians in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. First Secretary in the Indian Mission to the U.N. Mayank Joshi said in the Right of Reply on Tuesday. In spite of this, India remains committed to resolving all outstanding issues with Pakistan in an atmosphere free from terror and violence. Joshi has stated. He was responding to Pakistan's envoy to U.N. Maleeha Lodhi who raised the Kashmir issue and right to self-determination of the Kashmiris in the U.N. General Assembly's third committee debate on rights of people to self-determination. In her statement to the committee, Ms. Lodhi had repeated Pakistan's call for UNSC resolutions to be implemented in the State and said fulfilling promise of self-determination to the Kashmiri people is "indispensable" to establishing lasting peace and stability in South Asia. Joshi termed her comments "totally out of context and baseless" and said the misuse of the U.N. forum by "making tendentious references to the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir constitutes a clear interference in the internal affairs of India." Why does not Pakistan listen to India's precondition for the resumption of bilateral dialogue? It seems that Islamabad is adopting dilatory tactics simply to keep the Kashmir issue alive. Keeping the Kashmir issue alive has been utilized by the successive establishments in Islamabad for diverting peoples' attention and interest from political, security and economic crises. At least for a change Pakistan should have listened to India's advice and it should have waited for New Delhi's reaction once Pakistan stopped exporting terror to India and shut all arms training camps established in Pakistan and occupied Kashmir. For a change let Pakistan discuss other issues including water, Sir Creek, Siachen in order to promote confidence in the ties between the two nations. Let Pakistan change its mindset on Kashmir because since India says Kashmir is non-negotiable and wants Pakistan to vacate that part of Indian state which is under its illegal occupation there cannot be any meeting line between the two sides as far as the Kashmir issue is concerned. Of late Pakistan has denied the charge it was providing arms training to militantys before pushing them into Jammu and Kashmir. If Islamabad has any doubt on it it should read again the latest statement from its former President and military ruler,Gen. Pervez Musharraf eho admitted that Islamabad trained Lashkar-e-Toiba activists before they were sent to Kashmir for fighting Jehad. |
