Ahead of PM Modi's visit Srinagar turned into fortress with heightened security measures | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report srinagar, Nov 5: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the State on November 7, Srinagar, summer capital of the State has virtually been turned into a fortress with intensified security measures. Police and security forces personnel could be seen manning the important positions in order to ensure that fool proof security arrangements are in place for the Prime Minister's visit. Special emphasis has been laid on security around Sher-I-Kashmir Cricket stadium where the Prime Minister would address a rally on Saturday. The administration has already sealed off the cricket stadium with the Special Protection Group Prime Minister taking over the area. The traffic movement from Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) crossing to Sonwar via the cricket stadium has already been stopped and only the pedestrian movement was allowed today. Reports said that the vehicles coming from South Kashmir are being stopped near the Pantha Chowk by the police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. Thorough checking of the vehicles is being carried out and the people boarding the vehicles are put to questioning near this all important intersection of the Kashmir valley. At the same time the vehicles coming from Central Kashmir's Budgam district are being stopped near Hyderpora for thorough checking and frisking of the civilians. The vehicles coming from North Kashmir are being stopped by police and CRPF personnel near Parimpora. Checking of the vehicles and frisking of the people boarding the vehicles is being carried out there as well. Extra security measures have been put in place in areas that fall in the vicinity of venue of the rally. Same is the case with majority of the areas falling in the uptown of the summer capital. Intensified patrolling of police and security forces personnel could be seen today in the Lal Chowk and nearby commercially important areas. In the meantime, police and CRPF personnel could be seen stopping the passenger vehicles in some of the areas and asking the passengers to de-board the vehicles. The male passengers were put to frisking and also asked to prove their identity. As such the people faced difficulties in reaching their respective destinations more so due to the fact that weather has been inclement over the past few days. It would be in place to mention here that around 300 separatist leaders, activists and former militants have already been rounded up by police from Srinagar and other places of Kashmir valley. This has been done to ensure that the day passes off peacefully and the call of million march given by separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on November 7 is foiled. While as Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq have been put under house arrest, separatist leaders like Mohammad Yasin Malik, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Syeda Asiya Andrabi, Agha Syed Hassan, Javed Ahmad Mir and Hilal Ahmad War have been arrested and lodged in different jails. Some of the released militants have also been arrested and they have been kept in police stations near their respective residences. Meanwhile, High Court Bar Association (HCBA) today condemned the arrest of separatist leaders and said the arrests are totally uncalled for. The normal work was suspended in the courts as well as a mark of protest against the Government's action against separatists and their activists. |
