What's in PM's package? Only PM knows | | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 5: As the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Kashmir valley on November 7 has set the entire State machinery in motion, there is yet no official communication from the PMO to J&K Government about the details of the package likely to be announced by the PM. Sources said New Delhi has remained tightlipped about the quantum of package that would be announced for various developmental works in the State besides providing succour to the flood ravaged people of the State. "We can only guess how much amount would be granted for the relief and rehabilitation process. There is no final word about it being communicated by the Central Government to the State dispensation," sources said. They said even Finance Minister Dr Haseeb Drabu is himself in a fix over GoI's silence about the package. "Atleast the Finance Ministry of the State should be aware about the package details. We are merely relying on the media reports at present. We have no idea about the total package and its bifurcation," a senior official told Early Times while pleading for anonymity. He added the Finance Minister and Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed have discussed the issue and have decided to adopt a wait and watch policy for now. "Modi's visit could prove a turning point in Jammu and Kashmir's political history. If there is no major development seen on ground during the visit of the PM it could become troublesome for PDP to continue its alliance with the BJP," a PDP leader said. Sources in the Government said that after the brief communique from the GoI about the relief package for the flood victims was received by the J&K Government, it was felt that much more on ground is needed. "Again a high level official meeting has been called between the Union and the State Finance Ministry wherein JK dispensation is striving to get atleast Rs 11000 crore as relief and rehabilitation package from the Government," sources said. Earlier, there were reports that Modi on his visit to the State on November 7 will announce Rs 1 lakh crore development package. Reports also stated that out of the Rs 1 lakh crore package, Rs 2500 crore have been kept for the flood relief. "This is too meagre to be called as a relief. In real it is not. At least the Union Finance Ministry should have taken into account the report submitted by the NITI Ayog, if not the previous ones," the PDP leader said, adding that if the relief package continues to remain this much meagre, then it will become no less than a turbulent exercise for the present regime to handle crises on ground. As per reports, Mufti has once again asked the PMO and the Union Finance Ministry to increase the amount of package that is ought to be given to the flood victims. What remains to be seen is how the GoI would respond to Mufti's plea. |
