Govt school forced to operate from tiny railway quarters | Railway authorities sitting over permission to construct new building | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 5: Blame it on the insensitivity of the Railway authorities, a Government Middle School in Jammu city that has 550 students is running from dinghy rooms of railway quarters and despite grants under SSA to construct new school building, same is not being done due to indifference of Railway authorities. Government Middle School (GMS), Railway Colony is being run in outdated Railway quarters constructed way back in 1973 with only 12 small tiny rooms allocated for the school. At present the GMS, Railway Colony is the single largest school in Jammu district where more than 550 students have enrolled, however, even that distinction has not changed the fate of the school since as many as 17 classes comprising all sections are operating in the rooms not even sufficient to accommodate 20 students. The space constraint could be gauged from the fact that the teachers have to run four different classes in one hall. While the condition of the school building and its roofs constructed cement and tin sheets is deteriorating day by day but the number of students getting enrolled in this institution is growing on. Even the functioning of Mid-day meal scheme in the school is on the verge of closure due to the paucity of space which is leading to a chaotic situation where serving the food to students takes more than an hour. Though the School Education Department wants to construct a separate building for the school under Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) but the Railway authorities are not letting it happen as they are not granting permission for the same. Keeping in view the adamant attitude of the railway authorities on giving a go-ahead to construct new building, the school may be shifted to some other location so that the hardships of the students viz-a-viz staff could be ended. The staff of the school say that if the school gets a new premises it would be big relief for the students as well as the teachers because it is nothing but an ordeal for them to be in the small rooms for five-six hours each day.
