Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Dec 2: At a time when there is lot of talk about slaughter of bovine animals in the country, a resident of Khrew area in South Kashmir's Pulwama district is allegedly gearing up to construct a commercial slaughter house and that too in a residential area.
Ali Mohammad Ganie, resident of Khrew-Pulwama is planning to construct a sheep farm/slaughter house/commercial cow shed on the plot of land measuring 11 Marlas wherein he also has his residential house where he resides at present. Since the area is purely residential one the construction of slaughter house is all set to create health as well as environmental problems for the locals.
A group of locals while sensing that establishment of slaughter house would lead to environmental as well as health hazards approached the office of Municipal Committee, Khrew. The matter has since then gone to the office of Director Urban Local Bodies Kashmir and the complainants have also approached the court so that the proposed construction is stopped.
"Ali Mohammad has approached the Municipal Committee, Khrew with an application seeking permission to construct a room on the plot of land. However, he is not going to construct the room and instead preparations have been started with respect to construction of slaughter house. This would lead to environmental and health hazards to the whole locality and as such the construction needs to be stopped," said the residents. The claim of the residents has been substantiated by the report submitted by Executive Officer, Municipal Committee, Khrew. The Executive Officer in the report has said that Ali Mohammad has applied for permission to construct one room. He in the report has also mentioned that the health department and the town planner have also made it clear that Ali Mohammad should be stopped from constructing the slaughter house.
Town Planner for Anantnag and Pulwama, Gulzar Ahmad Dar has also submitted a report to Executive Officer, Municipal Committee, Khrew over the proposed construction of slaughter house in the area.
"After site inspection it was observed that the site falls in existing residential area. It was also observed that one number single storeyed residential house exists on site. As per the norms in vogue, the site cannot be used for any non-residential activity especially sheep farm/slaughter house-having health and environmental implications on the surroundings. As such, it is requested that any such non-conforming construction may not be allowed on the subject site," wrote the Town Planner in the report.
The complainants have even approached the court of Civil Judge (Munsiff) at Pampore who too has given a favourable report in their report.
However, despite all the positives in their favour the residents said that Ali Mohammad has dumped the material at the site and can start construction at any point of time. They also alleged that some of the local employees of Municipal Committee, Khrew are in league with Ali Mohammad and are extending all possible support to him vis-à-vis construction of slaughter house. When contacted Director Urban Local Bodies Kashmir, Tufail Matoo said that no permission whatsoever has been given to Ali Mohammad for any construction. He said that nobody would be allowed to construct any slaughter house in the area adding that complainants should have cooperate with the department in this regard.
