Jamia traders protest 'highhandedness' of Tourism deptt official | Threaten indefinite strike in downtown; Officials assure probe | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 2: Protests rocked the historic Jamia Market, Nowhatta here today with the shopkeepers taking to streets against the "highhandedness and abusive behavior" of Director Tourism Mehmood Shah who this morning visited the area. The protesting shopkeepers said it was for the first time in the history of Jamia Masjid that any government higher up has acted so rudely in the area and "insulted them like street dogs." "From ministers to bureaucrats, we greet everyone who visits this historic place but today he (Director Tourism) changed the history by misbehaving with us and treating us like criminals and abused us in full public gaze," the Jamia Traders Chairman Javaid Ahmed told Early Times. Javaid said the argument erupted this morning when Director Tourism visited the marketplace and they wanted to discuss the delay in the Jamia facelift project being executed by the Tourism Department. "But without any rhyme or reason he started abusing us. Such an unparliamentarily behavior is against the ethics of this sacred market," the traders said adding his behavior has brought "disrespect for the entire Jamia community." The traders said over the years the Tourism Department has miserably failed to meet deadlines in the timely execution of the Jamia beautification project and that the delay was hampering their business activities in the area. They said instead of feeling sorry for the failures, the Tourism department was trying to behave like despots. The traders said they would have called for an instant shutdown in entire downtown but that the timely intervention of Secretary Tourism Farooq Shah prevented them from doing so. "He contacted us on phone and assured action," the traders said. Threatening to go on indefinite strike should the government fail to initiate action against official, the protesting traders appealed Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and the Secretary Tourism Farooq Ahmed Shah to personally look into the matter in a time bound manner and initiate action against the accused. Despite repeated attempts Mehmood Shah could not be contacted for comments. When contacted an official spokesman of Tourism department said the matter has come to their notice. "We are looking into it and plan to call both the parties face to face for a consensus and harmony," the official said. |
