4,750 child labourers still waiting for school opening in Udhampur

Udhampur, Dec 17: Despite government's initiatives to end the menace of child labour in Udhampur and educating them atleast 4,750 child labourers in the district still are awaiting their rehabilitation states a new survey conducted by state government .
According to survey report of government 2006, there were 987 minors who have been working as labourers in one or the other forms, out of which 430 have been rescued and rehabilitated in the district for which the labour department with the support of the district administration of Udhampur has so far opened 11 rehabilitation centres for the rescued child labourers.
Reports said that the first school for the rescued child labourers was opened in October 2007 after the visit of Jyoti Setiya, the then chairperson of the National Advisory Board on Child Labour, who had chosen Udhampur for the NCLP programme due to the backwardness of the district. "Thereafter in June 2009, ten new Child Labour School were opened in Chenani, Dudu and Pancheri blocks of district . Currently, 11 child labour schools are functioning in the district, in which more than 450 children from child labour are being educated, the report mentioned.
R P Chaudhary, Director National Child Labour Project Udhampur claimed that Udhampur is the first district in the state where such revolutionary step has been taken to save the childhood of poor children. "This step has rekindled a ray of hope among those poor children who could not join school due to their poor economic condition, he said.
He added that after the successful functioning of 11 child labourer school in the district in 2007, we conducted fresh survey through Aganwari workers to identify child laborers in district year back .
The official added that report submitted by Aganwari workers through Social welfare department to Director in 2013 , showed that 4,750 children are still working as child labourers in the district and who are eagerously waiting for opening of new child labour school for them . He added that the same report is forwarded to the central government in March 2013 for getting its nod but till date nothing has been done he added . We have rehabilitated only half of the identified child labourers, in 2006 .The number of child labourers had increased in the district and there was a need to open more school for their rehabilitation .
