Authorities turning blind eye to rampant overloading in Poonch | | | M S Nazki Early Times Report Poonch, Dec 17: Despite state government claims that the accidents have taken heavy toll of human lives as compared to the militancy, but the authorities at the helms of affairs in this mountainous district of Poonch have failed to check the overloading of passenger vehicles which is termed as the main root cause of accidents. The sight of passengers sitting on rooftops of vehicles and many clinging to the doors is so common in the district that people responsible for regulation of the same hardly take notice. Locals alleged that taking advantage of severe shortage of staff in the Traffic Department private buses continue to flout rules and regulations thus putting thousands of lives at risk in twin border districts of Poonch. Ironically every year many passengers lose their precious lives due to accident caused by overloading in the private transport vehicles here in these frontier districts. In fact, both frontier districts Poonch and Rajouri are known for deadly accidents. Sources in the Traffic and Transport Departments attributed inadequate number of commercial vehicles and shortage of traffic regulating staff to indulge in overloading. Traffic and Transport Department has failed miserably in taking effective steps to check overloading in the border district. Tazeem Kazmi, a resident of Mendhar said, "Absence of new permits to private transporters is leading to overloading as the number of vehicles fall shot to the growing population in recent past years. "The menace of overloading has put lives at risk with buses and Tata Sumo jam-packed with the passengers, locals said and added, "students are left with no option but to board on jam packed buses because they had to reach school in time." Reports of overloading are mostly being pouring form Mendhar, Surankote, Poonch and Mandi. Local also alleged traffic police has also failed to stop private transporters from overloading courtesy unholy nexus between the transporters and traffic police in the area. |
