Several NHPC Uri-I daily wagers hurt in police action | | | Early Times Report BARAMULLA (Uri), Dec 17: Dozens of daily wagers of National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd (NHPC) Uri-1 were injured this evening after police used force to disperse them in Gingal area of Baramulla district where they were holding a protest, demanding their regularisation. According to sources, about 130 daily-wage employees of NHPC have been holding peaceful protests along with their families near Gingal NHPC Uri-1 for the past over one month. Police on Thursday resorted to lathicharge to disperse them. Sources said the police lathicharged the protesters and fired teargas shells after they did not allow other employees to work at the project. "They didn't pay any heed to police requests to lift their dharna, prompting cops to make use of force," the sources added. General Secretary of Trash Workers Union, Tufail Hussain said, "During Board of Directors meeting in New Delhi, we were told that all our pending issues will be resolved in one go, but three years have passed and nothing has been done so for." "We were doing peaceful protest in support of our demands lying pending for the past 17 years even though our documents were taken from us and we were shown the green pastures," said Hussain. Varinder Singh (HR), NHPC Uri-1, told early Times that they were the contract labourers and had been protesting for the past one month. "As they were not allowing us to move out of residential quarters, we wrote to the district administration and police for their intervention so that we could move out of our residences," said Singh. Protests were going on till the last reports came in. |
