CAPD Minister pricks Omar's NFSA resistance balloon | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 19: Rubbishing the claims of former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that his government had opposed the implementation of National Food Safety Act (NFSA) in Jammu and Kashmir, the Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Chowdhary Zulfikar Ali today reiterated that the previous government's cabinet had requested central government for implementation of the food law in the state. "In 2011, it was Cabinet decision vide order no 2011, by virtue of which the state government requested the Government of India to implement the National Food Security Bill in the state of Jammu and Kashmir," the Minister told reporters on the sidelines of inauguration of automation of Azad Filling Station here. "There's no need to give a proof when the Chief Minister(Omar) himself was chairing that Cabinet meeting," the Minister added. He said the "National Conference led government however failed to implement the NFSA as it was not able to provide ration to the people as per the census figure of 2011." Zulfikar said the implementation of the NFSA was in "the interest of the poor people of state and in the interest of the state." He accused the opposition National Conference of having snowballed it into controversy. "It should not have been made controversial when implementation of the act is for public good," the Minister said. Earlier this week, the National Conference (NC) working president and former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah had challenged Zulfikar to prove that the previous NC government wanted implementation of the food act. "The statement by the CAPD Minister that the Act was conceived by our government is baseless and misleading," Omar had said while addressing party workers convention in Shangus area of Anantnag. "I challenge the Minister to come up with any official document supporting his claim and make it public," Omar had said. He claimed: "I didn't allow the implementation of the National Food Security Act in the State despite recurring pressure from our then alliance partner, the Congress Party because I knew the Act was against the interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. I said I won't allow the implementation of this Act in J&K until I was convinced it would benefit my people." Omar also questioned the claims of CAPD Minister about providing quality food to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families on subsidized rates. "A person with cell phone does not fall under BPL category nor does one possessing a gas connection or having a house with a tin covered roof top," he said. Omar said his party will oppose the Act tooth and nail and pressurize government to revoke it come what may. |
