Solution to Jammu problem: Demand in Delhi for reorganization of J&K | | | ET Report jammu, Dec 19: The Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP), which last October adopted a resolution demanding status of statehood for "Jammu Pradesh", has taken up the issue of Jammu in a big way in Delhi. Significantly, it, the other day, organized a rally at Jantar Mantar, which was attended by activists from Jammu and other places of the country. Addressing the rally, Bhim Singh, chief patron of the JKNPP, advocated that the resolution of J&K lies in the reorganization of the State and reconstituting all the three regions namely, Ladakh-Gilgit, Kashmir Valley and Jammu Pradesh on the basis of geographical, cultural and ethnic basis to ensure that the citizens of India in J&K enjoyed social, cultural and political freedom and also strengthened their cultural bonds. Bhim Singh said after 1947 that India was reorganized on linguistic basis and this process continued for years and still continuing. "Gujarat was divided into Gujarat and Maharashtra. Assam was divided into seven States. Punjab, Bihar and other States, including Uttar Pradesh, were also reorganized on the linguistic, cultural, geographical and other disciplines," he said. He lamented that Delhi didn't think it prudent to also reorganize J&K State. He said J&K is as an integral part of the Indian Union as is entire North-East (Assam and other States in the region) and regretted that the Parliament of India has failed to understand the political, social and historical roots of Indian nationalism vis-a-vis J&K. He said the only way to restore lasting peace in J&K lies in the reorganization of State. If the Ladakhis, Kashmiris and Dogras are to preserve and promote their respective regional identities, reorganization of the State is imperative. Bhim Singh was absolutely right when he asserted that reorganization of J&K has become imperative in the larger national interest. There is nothing that is common between the State's three regions. The inter-regional relations in the State are bitter. The Ladakhis don't trust the Kashmiri leadership. They long for Union Territory status, saying they do not want to have any truck with the separatist or pro-autonomy and pro-self-rule Kashmiri leadership. The people of Jammu province are also of the same view and their demands range from statehood to regional council. They also want to link their fate with New Delhi and for better and worse. The Kashmiris hate the Dogras on the ground that they ruled over Kashmir for more than hundred years. Their ideology is separatist and communal and they want something the people of Jammu and Ladakh hate and despise. The fact of the matter is that J&K is an unnatural formation like Pakistan and that's the reason the State witnesses regional tensions on a daily basis. Even Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed has acknowledged that Jammu province and Kashmir Valley are like north and south poles and it is difficult to end regional tensions in the State. Not only the Chief Minister, the Congress in 2002 and 2008 had said in its election manifestos that if regional tensions are to be removed, the State constitution had to be amended so that the State polity was federalized. But more than that, there is almost consensus in Jammu province on the issue of reorganization. Leave aside a few Kashmiri agents here and there who term the demand for reorganization as communal. Let's see what the JKNPP leadership does to achieve its stated goal. It would surely gain if it works with devotion for the cause it has taken in hand. There is political vacuum in Jammu province and the JKNPP can fill that provided it sticks to its stand on reorganization of the State. |
