'NC appeases separatists, Pakistan to regain lost ground in Valley' | | | Early Times Report jammu, Dec 19: Except for the hardliners among the separatists the rest of the Kashmir centric political leaders feel optimistic about the proposed India-Pakistan dialogue process. The hardliners headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani are not optimistic because they do not believe that the Kashmir issue, which could not be settled for the last 68 years, can be resolved in any future parleys. "If Pakistan was 'made to talk terror', was India also 'made to talk Kashmir' since Jammu and Kashmir had found no mention in Ufa," Omar tweeted. But of late Omar Abdullah favours dialogue between India and Pakistan alongwith talks between New Delhi and the Kashmiri separatists. He believes that the Kashmir issue has two dimensions, internal and the external. The external dimensions of the issue could be resolved through sustained talks between India and Pakistan and the internal dimensions could be resolved through New Delhi-separatists talks. The moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said they were optimistic about a breakthrough on the Kashmir issue. "The two countries have to sit and talk. The visit of Sushma Swaraj to Pakistan is a positive sign and we hope that India will seriously start deliberations with Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir issue." Mirwaiz, has said. On the other hand, the Hurriyat hawk, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, snubbed the renewed dialogue, saying talks between the two nations for the last 68 years have never been result-oriented. "The dialogues between the two countries have never been productive," he has said "We don't oppose dialogue, but unless India and Pakistan accept Kashmir as the core issue, the political uncertainty will continue to haunt the region," he added. When Modi visited Srinagar recently and announced a developmental package of Rs 80,000 crore for the State, political commentators likened his remarks-that he did not need anyone's advise on Kashmir- to an "oblique snub" to the Chief Minister. Ajaz Ahmad, a political scientist at the University of Kashmir, said Mufti is looking at a breakthrough on the Kashmir issue, which will also become his personal legacy in the turmoil-hit State. "At this time of his life, Mufti Sayeed would like New Delhi to make a breakthrough in the dialogue process with Pakistan so that a positive movement is achieved. It is this hope that he had previously sold to the people in Kashmir, and he would like to make it happen now," Ajaz added What is peculiar about Kashmir centric political leaders is their silence on Pakistan's role in exporting terror to India in general and to Jammu and Kashmir in particular. No Kashmir politician has, while favouring resumption of dialogue between India and Pakistan, not urged Islamabad to stop using the soil of Pakistan for exporting terror to Jammu and Kashmir. Well as far as Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah are concerned their approach towards the resumption of dialogue moves from time to time. It has been seen that whenever the two are in power they are not keen to see resumption of bilateral talks between India and Pakistan. When in power they are not keen to see resumption of New Delhi-Hurriyat process of dialogue. Even though human memory is short still people remember how Farooq Abdullah had opposed dialogue with separatists. In fact if the Kashmir centric political leaders keep on swearing by the positive results of the dialogue process between India and Pakistan and between New Delhi and separatists they do so to keep their vote bank in the Kashmir valley in tact. The National Conference leadership feels that the party lost power in 2014 because of serious erosion in its vote bank. Hence it is trying to adopt a policy that could help it to regain the ground it had lost. Even though the 2014 election saw the PDP emerging as the largest single party with 28 seats having been bagged by its candidates it is losing its ground not only in the Kashmir valley but in the Jammu region. In a bid to regain peoples' support and trust the PDP leadership is raking up the need for initiating India-Pakistan talks and for resumption of the stalled dialogue between New Delhi and separatists. Nothing is definite about the results of the proposed talks. It is all suspended animation of ideas, goals and wishes. |
