Govt leaves non-insured flood hit traders high and dry | `Sell belongings to feed their families' | | Majid Nabi Srinagar, Jan 10: The flood hit non-insured traders in Srinagar city have been forced to sell their belongings as the government left them high and dry. In a shocking revelation the flood hit non-insured businessmen in Srinagar are at the verge of starvation and many of them have started to sell leftover commodities to make a living. "Many traders have started to sell of their belongings for survival; recently a man from Shaheed Gunj sold his Samovar after floods damaged his shop. He had nothing to feed his children and this forced him to take such an extreme step," Imtiyaz Ahmad told 'Early Times:. Despite repeated assurances, the government has failed to rehabilitate the flood affected non insured traders even as all the required formalities were completed long back. "Government is silent on rehabilitation of non insured traders for the past one year despite fulfilling all formalities including soliciting affidavits and lists pertaining to non insured traders with the D C Office, nothing substantiated has been done in this direction," said Sajad Ahmad a non insured trader at Lal Chowk. The traders questioned the sincerity of the government in rehabilitating the non insured traders after 800 crore rupees were earmarked for flood victims, "Government used time buying techniques to befool traders, asking them to submit the list of traders who were not covered with insurance," he alleged. The visibly perturbed and economically desperate shopkeepers said that they have been running from pillar to post so that adequate compensation is given to them, but to no avail. It is pertinent to mention here that state government had on November 7, 2014 said that Rs. 800 crores have been earmarked for rehabilitation of flood hit non-insured traders of the state. The amount was part of Rs. 80,000 crores developmental package announced by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi during his public rally at the Sheri Kashmir cricket stadium here on November 7 last year. |
