Sonia Gandhi, Nitin Gadkari join thousands to pay tributes to former CM | Mufti Mohammad Sayeed remembered on Chaharum at Bijbehara, Fairview-Gupkar | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 10: A galaxy of top political personalities of the state and centre converged at Fairview on the Gupkar road here to offer their condolence to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on demise of her father and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Union Minister for Surface Transport, Nitin Gadkari and Congress President Sonia Gandhi were some of the renowned political personalities who visited Mehbooba and other members of the family to offer their condolence on the death of Mufti Sayeed. The former Chief Minister passed away in the morning of January 7 (Thursday) at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi where he had been admitted on December 24 last year. The union minister for surface transport visited the Fairview residence and conveyed condolences to Member Parliament and PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti. Gadkari was accompanied by BJP State President, Sat Sharma and senior leaders, Dr. Nirmal Singh and Sukhnandan Kumar. He said the entire country stands in solidarity with the bereaved family in sharing grief on the demise of Mufti Sayeed. Congress President, Sonia Gandhi visited the residence of Muftis to personally convey condolences to Mehbooba. Sonia was accompanied by Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and former Chief Minister of the state, Ghulam Nabi Azad, senior Congress leader, Ambika Soni, President, Pradesh Congress Committee, Ghulam Ahmad Mir and former PCC President, Saif-ud-Din Soz. The Congress President while paying rich tributes to former Chief Minister said the death of Mufti Sayeed was a huge loss for the country. She also met the other family members, including Begum Mufti Sayeed, and expressed solidarity in their hour of grief. The Congress President had visited AIIMS as well. Sonia had hailed Mufti Sayeed as a humanist, whose contribution in various capacities in public life would be remembered forever. In the morning Mehbooba accompanied by the other members of the family including her mother visited the mausoleum of Mufti Sayeed at Dhara Shikoh Bagh in Bijbehara and offered Fateha on the fourth day (Chaharum) of former Chief Minister. The Muftis along with the other PDP legislators, workers and BJP legislators were joined by thousands on this occasion to pay their respects to Mufti Sayeed. The sprawling Dhara Shikoh Bagh, where the former CM was laid to rest, today swarmed with wailing mourners who could not hold their tears back at the passing away of a dear leader who ruled their hearts with love and affection for 60 years. Dhara Shikoh Bagh is the same garden where Mufti Sayeed started his political career. The congregational prayers were led by Maulana Zia-ul-Haq and attended by hundreds and thousands of his admirers, who bid one final adieu to their beloved leader. Besides daughter, Mehbooba Mufti, close family members, including Begum Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and son Tassaduq Mufti, were present on the occasion. Also present were former Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader, Dr. Nirmal Singh, ex-Ministers, Legislators, senior party leaders and functionaries and top officers of the State Government including Chief Secretary, B. R. Sharma, Financial Commissioner, B. B. Vyas and Director General of Police, K. Rajendra Kumar. After Congregational Fateha, Mehbooba along with her brother, slowly walked up to the podium and waved to an emotional crowd of people, which was seen chanting slogan - Jab Tak Sooraj Chand Rahega, Mufti Tera Naam Rahega. Subsequently, a condolence meeting was held at the Fairview residence of departed leader at Gupkar, Srinagar in which several religious and political leaders paid glowing tributes to the late Chief Minister. Besides a galaxy of political personalities, PDP legislators, workers, BJP leaders, workers and common people gathered to pay their tributes to Mufti Sayeed. |
