Powerful BJP Ministers turn ‘powerless’ overnight | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 10: The delay in government formation and imposition of Governor's rule in JK are giving sleepless nights to the BJP leaders who lost power overnight. They slept as all powerful ministers and woke up in the morning as "powerless" legislators. Sources told Early Times that imposition of Governor's rule in JK caught the BJP leaders off guard as most of them had not even imagined that PDP president Mehbooba Mufti would show reluctance vis-à-vis taking oath as the 13th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir after her father's demise. Insiders revealed that the people within the BJP who were making noise about having a rotational Chief Minister have been asked to keep quiet as the BJP central leadership is keen on carrying on with the alliance in JK with the PDP. BJP leaders, according to the sources, are "cursing" themselves for not allowing Mehbooba to take over as the Chief Minister when her late father and Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had proposed it. "At that point of time BJP leaders acted smart and prevented Mehbooba from taking over as the Chief Minister. They (BJP leaders) left no stone unturned to ensure that there is no change of guard in the state," said a source. He said, "Had the BJP leaders applied common sense at that point of time situation could have been different at this point of time." Sources said that Congress leaders coming forward at this crucial juncture and staying by Mehbooba's side in this hour of grief has unnerved the BJP leaders and the former ministers who have been left in the "midst of a storm" due to imposition of Governor's rule in JK. "Arrival of top Congress leaders, including Congress President Sonia Gandhi, in Srinagar on Sunday to attend the fourth day mourning ceremony of late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is giving anxious moments to BJP as speculations are rife that Congress has offered unconditional support to PDP to form the next government in Jammu and Kashmir," said a source. An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "Mehbooba has pushed BJP on back foot. The BJP leaders, who were dreaming about striking a deal with PDP this time around, have been left red faced. They are hoping that Mehbooba would continue the BJP-PDP alliance as it was formed by her late father. Right now only mission of the BJP leaders is to ensure that government is re-constituted and they get their powers back." On Sunday Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari visited Fair View residence of Muftis at Gupkar here to express condolences and solidarity with the bereaved family. After expressing condolences Gadkari, who was accompanied by former Deputy CM Dr Nirmal Singh and BJP State President Sat Sharma, said, "Government of India would work to realize all the dreams of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed." BJP is trying its best to assure PDP that late Chief Minister's death has not derailed the coalition and nothing has changed. BJP leaders have given all possible hints about that they being comfortable with PDP and its leaders in JK are maintaining silence. |
