Despite US campaign, ISIS on growth path | | | Not only the US but 16 other coun tries, including Russia, are at war with the ISIS. And US President Barack Obama has pledged to end the menace of ISIS the way the US and NATO forces had eliminated the threat of al-Qaeda after its supremo Osama bin Laden was killed. What is disturbing for Pakistan is Obama's announcement that Pakistan and Afghanistan have become a safe sanctuaries for the ISIS and other terrorists groups. And despite the fact that more than 20,000 ISIS activists have been killed in series of air raids carried out by the US and Russia during the last over one year, the IS activists continue to pose a major threat to the world peace. Obama declared that air raids would be intensified to destroy the oil supply depots of the ISIS, their hideouts and their weapons. Delivering his seventh and final State of the Union address to a joint session of the Congress, Obama sought to inspire and unify a country that is gripped by fear and uncertainty fanned by a fractious election campaign that is under way. The U S will elect a new president in November. Obama has strongly rejected the narrative being popularised by Republican front runners -- Donald Trump and Ted Cruz -- that the IS campaign was an existential threat to the U S. "We just need to call them what they are - killers and fanatics who have to be rooted out, hunted down, and destroyed… That's exactly what we are doing," Obama said, adding, "But they do not threaten our national existence." It is in the light of the growing menace of the ISIS that Obama sought the Congress support for the anti-IS war launched by Washington which has the support of 16 countries, including Saudi Arabia. In fact Obama's claim that Pakistan and Afghanistan continue to be a safe haven for the ISIS and other terror groups should be treated as a warning for Pakistan which has been blamed for carrying our armed attack on Mazar-e-Shoda in Afghanistan. In reality, Kabul government has held Pakistani agencies, including its Army responsible for several bomb explosions and gun attacks in Afghanistan. Well, the way Russian forces have been pounding the bases of ISIS should be a warning to those Indian boys who plan to visit Syria or Iraq or Turkey for joining the ISIS. They must realize the futility of the anti-human acts in Syria, Turkey or Iraq where the US and the Russian Air forces and other armed forces were directly involved in a fight against the ISIS. Well, Obama may not be able to end the menace of ISIS till its Chief Abu Bakr al Baghdadi continues to call the shots. If Obama has succeeded in taming Al Qaeda he did so only after the US forces eliminated Osama bin Laden. Hence survival of Baghdadi is linked to the survival of ISIS. The ISIS has registered a phenomenal growth since 2006 when it was formed in Syria. And by now it controls one third of the country despite direct support to the anti-ISIS forces of the US forces and the forces of allies of US. Well even if one believes in the figures dished out by Obama that till date 20,000 ISIS activists have been killed in air raids it indicates that several thousand or to be on the safe side several lakh able bodied youth have joined the ISIS and are ready to sacrifice their lives for the purpose of establishing Islamic laws in several countries and for replacing the Al Qaeda. The ISIS may also pose a new challenge to the Indian forces guarding the LoC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir in case they attempt to find safe places in Kashmir. Hence it is the top job assigned to the troops and the BSF, guarding the LoC and the IB, in Jammu and Kashmir to devise sufficient means and methods for halting any ingress of ISIS activists. Senior Army functionaries have so far ruled out the possibility of any infiltration of the IS activists into J&K but once they establish hideouts in Pakistan, they may turn towards the J&K borders. This way the border management and the security grid on the LoC and the IB have to be upgraded in the state. |
