BJP keeps fingers crossed | | | Muhammad Mukaram Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 14: The BJP is in middle of crisis, as PDP president Mehbooba Mufti continues to delay her decision on government formation, triggering speculations that its former ally Congress might replace the saffron party. "For the moment no one knows what is in her mind. After remaining silent for four days she met two or three people on Monday, even as far as I know she hasn't spoken to them anything on government formation. She is completely broken," a senior PDP told EarlyTimes. Despite the period of mourning coming to an end on Sunday, Mehboobacontinues to remain silent and in "no hurry," as the state is presently governed by the Governor NN Vohra, second time in ten months. There are speculations and rumours doing rounds in the political circles in valley that PDP president is hurt by an unnecessary delay in the economic package by the BJP and insensitiveness of its leadership for literally pushing PDP on government formation. The possibility of Mehbooba snapping ties with BJP and going with Congress with support from Independent MLAs is gaining ground. This seems reinforced by the fact that Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi along with Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ambika Soni personally visited Mehbooba's residence to offer condolences. Azad even surprised many by visiting Mufti's grave on second day of his death. "Congress is wildly reaching out to the PDP as it sees an opportunity to gain power in J&K," said a PDP leader who wished anonymity. Mufti Sayeed's decision to ally with BJP, which had first time won 25 seats from winter capital of Jammu areas, was met with inflexible resistance even from within his own party. Speculations are roaming around People's Democratic Party in an utter of confusion as former Chief Minister and leader of opposition in Rajya sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad is trying is hard to keep his former ally and Mehbooba Mufti led party away from the Right wing BJP. After the government formation with Hindu Right wing-BJP, core and founder members of PDP leaders Muzaffar Hussain Beig and Tariq Hameed Karra have openly opposed the decision. Soon after Mufti passed away Beig asked Mehbooba to make a "fresh start" which is being interpreted as a pullout from the coalition with BJP. A sense of dissatisfaction however prevails in PDP party as top BJP bigwigs did not turn up at Muftis residence to offer condolence to the bereaved family. Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, BJP president. Amit Shah and other leaders of the party like Arun Jaitlay , L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, who played a key role in the government formation with PDP, didn't turn up at either AIIMS or at his residence, raising eye brows among the party and its followers, and, seemingly, forcing to rethink the alliance. When late Mufti Sayeed took oath in winter capital of state Jammu including Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, and BJP president, Amit Shah, and other senior Leaders of BJP were present on the stage during the oath ceremony on March 1 2015. In the 87-member J&K assembly PDP has 28 seats while Congress has only 12. If both choose to ally they will be short of four seats but the Independent MLAs including Engineer Rashid have already offered their support if Mehbooba walks out of the BJP-supported coalition. |
