Mir's statement on Govt formation raises brows | | | ET Report SRINAGAR, Jan 14: The recent statement of state Congress Chief GA Mir surprised many within the party. Mir had told the PDP-BJP to form the government at an earliest. The statement reflects that Mir has not been privy to latest developments taking place within the party and party's recent deliberations with the PDP after chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's death in AIIMS on January 7. As Sonia Gandhi, Ambika Soni and Ghulam Nabi Azad were in constant touch with the PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, speculations were rife that new government sans BJP is likely in the offing. At a time when PDP leadership prefers to to remain tight-lipped, the statement of the Congress chief has raised many brows. "The seven day mourning has ended. Now, it is the responsibility of both the PDP and BJP, which have the mandate of the people in the state, to give government to the people," Mir was quoted as having said. Mir said that PDP and BJP are "duty bound" to give representation to people. "People have started asking questions to PDP and BJP. So, the two parties should form the government as early as possible. Governor's rule and political stalemate are not appreciated by people in the state," he added. Such a statement has not only hinted at the lack of unanimity within the Congress party but has also sent signals about the incumbent party chief's ignorance about party affairs. Sources said that at a time when Azad and some other congress veterans held discussions with some senior PDP leaders, Mir was not taken on board and that he had no information over what has really finalised behind the closed doors. By asking both the PDP and the BJP to form the government in the state urgently, Mir has made it public that Congress would have no sharing in the cake. The statement has also, as per sources , disgruntled some PDP leaders who had not commented over whether Mehbooba would prefer Congress over BJP or not. Even the PDP leader Naeem Akhtar was quoted in the reports on Thursday saying that the party would deliberate over whether its bonhomie with the BJP for around 10 months has yielded any results. Akhtar's this statement has given clear indication that the party hasn't so far given nod to continue its coalition with its ally. |
