Rich tributes paid to Shaheed | | | Early Times Report Kathua, Jan 14: Rich tributes were paid to Shaheed Piar Singh (Martyr of Operation Meghdoot of Siachen Glacier) on his martyrdom anniversary in a simple but impressive function organized by his family members at his Memorial Gate located at Kuke Chak, near Radio Station, here today. Operation Meghdoot was the code -name for the Indian Armed Forces operation to capture the Siachen Glacier. The military operation was launched on 13 April 1984 which was unique as the first assault launched in the world's highest battlefield. The military action resulted in Indian troops gaining control of the entire Siachen Glacier. The local unit of the Army paid rich tributes to the great soldier for his saga of valour and devotion to duty. A Plantation drive was also held on the occasion. MLA Kathua Rajiv Jasrotia, Dr Bharat Bhushan, Chief Executive Officer, Lakhanpur Sarthal Development Authority, said that Shaheed Piar Singh sacrificed his life for safeguarding the country. He said that the great soldier saved life of his five accompanying soldiers of 17 JK Rifles. Shaheed Piar Singh was awarded Sena Medal on January 26, 2005 DC Kathua, Ramesh Kumar spoke high of the brave soldier and saluted him for keeping high the traditions of Indian Army. He assured all help to the family of the soldier from the Administration. |
