Night temp remains below freezing point

SRINAGAR, Jan 14: Cold wave intensified in the Kashmir valley, where the minimum temperature remained below the freezing point while day has also become chilly due to cloudy weather and icy winds. Leh was coldest in the region at minus 13.5 degree Celsius minimum temperature against yesterday's 13.2 degree while at Kargil it remained minus 12.4 degree in Ladakh region while world famous health resort of Pahalgam recorded lowest temperature in the valley at minus 4.4 degree.
The sky was cloudy and icy cold winds continued as people woke up in the Valley, including summer capital, Srinagar this morning after yet another cold night.
Srinagar recorded further drop in the minimum temperature due to clear sky during the night after more than five degree above normal maximum temperature yesterday.
However, the situation changed this morning due to cloudy sky and icy cold winds resulting in severe cold today in the city.
A MeT spokesman said against yesterday's minus 2.5 degree minimum temperature, it was minus 2.9 degree, a notch below normal in the city, where coldest so far was recorded minus 5.6 degree on December 21.
However, Pahalgam, the base camp of holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalyas, was coldest in the Valley though the mercury has witnessed some increase.
Against yesterday's minus 4.9 degree, it was minus 4.4 degree at the famed health resort, where water level in water bodies, including river Lidder remained low as snow on high reaches was frozen. Famous health resort of Gulmarg also witnessed improvement in the night temperature. Against yesterday's minus 5 degree, it was minus 4.2 degree, three notches above normal.
There was no change in the minimum temperature at Qazigund where it remained minus 2.8 degree while at Kokernag it witnessed major improvement as against yesterday's minus 2.2 degree, it was mius 0.4 degree, three notches above normal.
At Kupwara it was minus 2.5 degree, half a notch below normal.
