Police fail to act promptly, send the girl back, saying such incidents are a routine affair | Purse-snatchers strike near Janipur police naka | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 14 : Two motorcycle-borne youth Wednesday evening intercepted a girl near a police naka at Janipur, snatched her purse and then sped away without being caught. The girl immediately rushed to the police naka and then to the adjoining Janipur police station, but cops failed to act promptly as a result of which the purse-snatchers melted into the nearby lane, that leads towards Paloura. Shweta, daughter of Subash Chander of Chougan Slathia, Panjtirthi, had just crossed the police naka at Janipur and was heading towards her aunt's house at Buta Nagar when a motorcycle slowed down near her at about 6 pm. Its pillion rider, who had covered his face with a handkerchief, snatched her purse. Though she raised an alarm, the duo sped away from the scene, she told police in her statement. She was, however, surprised to find that instead of acting swiftly on her complaint and chase the purse-snatchers, a cop inside the police station got busy on his cellphone. After a minute or so, he asked her to report the matter to the SHO, pointing towards his office. She wasted no time in reaching the SHO's office, but was surprised more when he said such incidents "are a routine affair in the area". "Near the Swagat multi-utility store also, the incidents of purse-snatching have taken place," the SHO allegedly told the girl. Left with no other alternative, the girl left the police station with a heavy heart. She felt that had the police acted swiftly, the purse-snatchers could have possibly been apprehended. The purse contained Rs 10,000 in cash, a gold nose ring, a cellphone worth Rs 7,000, its charger and a headphone, besides some items of daily use. |
