Cong divided over participation in Govt formation | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 28: State Congress is clearly divided over exploring the possibilities of forming an alliance with People's Democratic Party for formation of Government in Jammu and Kashmir, where a political stalemate is prevailing since the death of former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. This division was visible during the Core Group meeting at Jammu where all the sitting MLAs and MLCs of the party forcefully advocated for playing an active role in formation of Government and participation in the same even as the PCC president G A Mir, Senior vice-president Sham Lal Sharma and others expressed their reservations over sharing power. According to the sources, there was no unanimity among the Core Group members unlike the official statement to media by the PCC headquarters. Though everyone in the meeting talked of strengthening Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir, the suggested mode of rejuvenating was different, sources added. While elaborating, sources informed that all the sitting MLAs and MLCs in the Core Group meeting stressed that Congress should not shirk its responsibility in the present political scenario and must join hands for a grand alliance in J&K to form a Government and keep the BJP out of power. "Being in Government we can effectively serve our people while continuously remaining out of power for the next five years will force our supporters to look towards BJP for all works," sources quoted a sitting MLA from erstwhile Doda and added that almost similar opinion was expressed by all other sitting legislators. However, on the other hand, the PCC president G A Mir and other senior leaders of the party opined that Congressmen should wait and watch the situation while remaining out of power and concentrate only on strengthening the party so that Congress may form Government on its own in the next Assembly elections. BJP coalition with PDP or even NC would not last long and the State is likely to witness midterm poll very soon, they predicted. As reported by the Early Times, meeting of the Core Group comprising sitting legislators, general secretaries and vice-presidents of PCC, besides the president and senior vice-president, was convened on the direction of party high command for seeking feedback on Congress role in the present political scenario in J&K. |
