Srinagar, June 16: The centuries old historic Tomb commonly known as (Dumat) at 90 feet road Soura craves for government attention as the same is on the verge of collapse as Department of Archaeology watches with indifference
This monument of historical importance built by famous ruler Zainul Abideen as a resting place for travelers has been in shambles due to Archaeological Department's sheer negligence in restoring it in its original form.
The locals allege that except erecting a signboard in front of the monument terming it a protected site and cautioning people to desist from damaging the tomb premises, it has done nothing till date to catch the attention of tourists.
"I have been living adjacent to this monument from past 20 years, and up to this moment I have never seen a single Archaeological Department official visit this site or carry out maintenance work in it. Instead the Tomb walls besides developing cracks have started falling apart thus turning it into ruins," Lateef Ahmad Zargar, a resident of Soura told 'Early Times'.
The tomb which could have been another tourist attraction in Srinagar city besides many other archaeological sites developed by ruler Zainul Abideen or Mughals has also been a victim of public gluttony.
"Major chunk of land that belonged to this monument has been encroached by locals who have allotted a portion of it to graveyard while a few houses and shops have been constructed over it," claimed a local wishing anonymity.
He said till date neither the government nor the Archaeological department has taken action against encroachers "by this observation it clearly looks that Archaeological department has abandoned this historical tomb".
The locals said even as Archaeological department has renovated many such monuments in the city but it continues to ignore the maintenance of this tomb, for reason best known to them.
They appealed state government to either take over the affairs of this tomb and recover the lost land from encroachers and restore it to its erstwhile glory and throw it open for visitors and make Department of Archaeology accountable for neglecting it and turning it into ruins.
